This week, our members trained on DOT 406 tanker trailer operations and hazardous materials spill control using a tanker prop and product transfer equipment. Training included emergency shutoff operations, leak control, product transfer using manual and pneumatic pumps, foam application considerations, and atmospheric monitoring for flammable liquid incidents.

The drill also incorporated lessons learned from recent real-world incidents, in our district, involving a commercial CO2 leak and an ethanol fire response, reinforcing the importance of continuous hazardous materials training and operational readiness.

All firefighters at the Ridge Road Fire District are trained to the Hazardous Materials Technician level. This level of training and commitment helps ensure our crews are prepared to safely protect our community during complex hazardous materials emergencies.

Great work by all members who participated and to the instructors who helped develop and deliver the drill. Training like this helps prepare our crews for the complex hazardous materials incidents we encounter in our community.

Last week we had the opportunity to work with the Navy’s Delayed Entry Program to help with two critical things every Sailor must understand from day one: damage control and responsibility.

These Future Sailors learned basic firefighting tactics while reinforcing the importance of the 11 General Orders of a Sentry. While they may seem unrelated, both work together to help prevent disasters before they happen.

Every Sailor in the United States Navy is a firefighter. Regardless of job or rank, every Sailor receives basic firefighting qualifications because when you’re out at sea, the crew is the emergency response team.

The 11 General Orders help build disciplined watch standers who stay alert, communicate clearly, and recognize problems early. A properly trained Sailor may prevent an emergency entirely — or catch it before it becomes catastrophic.

By introducing this training during DEP, it helps to lay the foundation that Recruit Division Commanders can continue building on in boot camp to produce prepared, resilient Sailors ready for whatever emergency may come in the fleet.

Ridge Road Fire District Restores Stone Ridge Station Little Library, Offering Fire Safety Resources to the Community

The Ridge Road Fire District Stone Ridge Station Little Library has returned to its location in front of the new and improved Stone Ridge station. Community members are invited to stop by and pick up fire safety information available inside.
The Little Library is intended to provide easy, no-cost access to educational materials that support safe homes and neighborhoods. Visitors are encouraged to take a resource and share the information with family, friends, and neighbors.

Originally conceptualized and constructed during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Stone Ridge Station Little Library was created as a way to continue sharing critical fire safety information with the public. A sincere thanks to the firefighters and staff at the Stone Ridge station for supporting and maintaining this community resource over the years.

Today we share the sad news of the passing of Past Chief Kenneth “Butch” Volkmar. Chief Volkmar dedicated more than 30 years of service to the Greece Ridge Fire Department and the Ridge Road Fire District, leaving a lasting mark on both organizations and the community he served.

He will be fondly remembered for his kitchen table coffee conversations; where his stories, wisdom, and camaraderie were always shared. Though he is gone, his legacy of service, leadership, and friendship will continue to live on in all who knew him.

Please keep Chief Volkmar’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of serving alongside him in your thoughts and prayers
