Stories from the Report to the Community: Breaking Barriers, Building a Future

“I failed my first test ever, my trigonometry test, and I asked myself, ‘How am I going to come back from this?’”

Sara Venegas, a senior at Early College Academy (ECA) who was a finalist for the prestigious Boettcher Foundation Scholarship, reflects for a moment and leans forward in her chair, "One little misstep doesn't define you. I don't always have to be the perfectionist. I can push forward and still do well."

The high school senior will be the first in her family to attend college after high school. While Sara's family did not have the first-hand knowledge to eventually guide her through the higher education system, they deliberately cultivated a supportive home environment and community that inspired her to pursue her academic goals. This emphasis on community became an integral part of Sara's value system, pushing her to excellence and molding her into the scholar she is.

A program you may not know much about in District 6: Culinary Classroom!

Culinary Classroom is a program designed to introduce culinary skills, nutrition education, and healthy eating habits to our K-8 students! Our Greeley-Evans District 6 Nutrition Services staff give our students the knowledge and tools to make healthy food choices and be independent in the kitchen. Students learn how to identify food groups and enjoy hands-on time creating healthy snacks and breakfasts.

In May, we joined Shawsheen Elementary School 2nd graders students during Culinary Classroom. We learned how to make a delicious yogurt parfait with strawberries, bananas, vanilla yogurt, and granola! Students were excited to learn how to properly hold and use kid-friendly knives to slice their fruit. And, of course, students were super excited to eat their delicious and nutritious snack packed with dairy, protein, carbohydrates, and fruit!

We are excited to share stories with you from our annual Report to the Community!

The 2025-2026 Report to the Community was mailed to all of our Greeley and Evans Community at the end of May.

First up, a message from our District 6 Leadership!

As we reflect on this past year, the word that continues to rise to the surface is gratitude. It is our honor to share the Report to the Community, but more importantly, it is to say, "THANK YOU." In Greeley-Evans School District 6, we know that we not only serve a community; we are part of one. The success of our students is a direct reflection of the incredible support we receive from our families, local businesses, and our civic partners.

We have so much to celebrate together. Our collective hard work has led us to a historic milestone, achieving an all-time high graduation rate exceeding 90 percent. This is not just a number - it represents hundreds of individual success stories and bright futures for our students. This excellence is felt across our school sites, with 18 schools earning the "performance rating," the highest designation from the Colorado Department of Education. And of course, our pride reached new heights this year as we celebrated our very own Stephen Paulson, a social studies and AVID teacher at Greeley Central High School, as the Colorado Teacher of the Year. His recognition is a powerful reminder of the extraordinary educators in District 6 who inspire, support, and guide students every single day.

These achievements are made possible because you have chosen to invest in our children. We are deeply grateful for the community trust in renewing the Mill Levy Override and for your continued support as we complete the first phase of bond projects throughout District 6. These investments allow us to provide the safe and modern facilities our students deserve.

Last week, we volunteered at the Weld Food Bank as part of our D6 Gives Back initiative!

D6 Gives Back is an employee volunteer program born out of Innovation2030, within the Strengthening Partnerships focus area.

The program offers eight hours of paid leave for staff to volunteer in the community during their contract time. Last year, central administration office employees piloted the program. This year, the program expanded to include school administrators and technical staff. This program will continue to grow each year.

We work with 21 organizations to provide volunteer opportunities to our employees. School-based staff who cannot typically leave their building sites participate in philanthropic projects that can be completed at their school site, or volunteer on days that students are not in school. We track volunteer hours with the assistance of our community partners.

We look forward to continuing to provide volunteer opportunities for all of our staff to give back to this wonderful community! We love you, Greeley and Evans ❤

The end of the 2025-2026 school year was full of celebrations! 🎉

Prairie Heights Middle School honored Mr. Kevin Espinoza, affectionately known as Mr. Espy, for his 32 years of teaching, 27 of which were at Prairie Heights/John Evans. Students and staff dressed up as Mr. Espy, revealed a banner in the gym honoring Mr. Espy's years of service, and tearfully wished him a wonderful retirement. Mr. Espy impacted countless lives during his time in D6. We are truly honored that he chose to teach at District 6!

Students were also celebrated at this assembly with academic awards! Families were able to proudly cheer on their students as they received these awards ❤

The D6 Difference: Here's why staff choose D6!

Meet Educator Adam Cordova from Northridge High School!

"The primary reason I remain dedicated to Northridge and District 6 is the sense of community. Seeing so much of my own experience reflected in the student body, I believe students simply need someone they can connect with - a mentor to show them that if I can succeed and serve as a ray of light, they can as well. The teachers here at Northridge are deeply invested in our students. We are committed to impacting lives, encouraging them to believe in themselves, and helping them grow into positive, contributing members of our community."
