Learning Disabilities Awareness Month is an opportunity to raise awareness about the diverse ways people learn and process information—and to recognize the importance of accessibility and equal opportunity.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) helps ensure that people with learning disabilities have equal access to education, employment, and public services. Depending on the situation, this may include accommodations like extended time for tasks, alternative formats for materials, or modifications to policies and procedures.

Providing accommodations isn't about giving someone an advantage—it's about removing barriers, so everyone has an equal opportunity to succeed. Understanding how the ADA applies to learning disabilities helps create more inclusive schools, workplaces, and communities.

National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) is an opportunity to learn more about disability and employment—including the employment protections provided by Title I of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Under Title I, the ADA protects qualified individuals with disabilities from discrimination in employment. These protections can apply to areas such as:

• Job applications and hiring
• Training and advancement
• Pay and benefits
• Leave
• Workplace policies and practices
• Reasonable accommodations

A reasonable accommodation is a change to a job, the workplace, or the way things are typically done that can help a qualified individual with a disability to apply for, perform, or access the benefits of a job.

The ADA National Network's resource also highlights an important part of the accommodation process: a person can request a reasonable accommodation at any point during the employment process, and employers and employees can work together to identify an effective solution.

This full-time position reports to the Principal, School for the Deaf, and serves both as a strategic leader and systems coordinator for the School for the Deaf's instructional programs.

The ADA provides guidelines to help ensure polling locations are accessible to all voters—whether that means providing temporary accessible parking, allowing service animals, or ensuring voters can bring someone to assist them.

Maggie emphasized that every polling location is unique, and voters should understand their rights under the ADA. If you have questions about accessibility at your polling place or need guidance on what the law says and what you can ask for, we encourage you to reach out.

Each October, National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) highlights the contributions of workers with disabilities and provides an opportunity to learn more about disability employment.

As workplaces continue to evolve, understanding the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and its employment provisions can help employers and employees stay informed about disability-related workplace considerations, including reasonable accommodation and employment practices.

This NDEAM, we’re also sharing research that offers insight into the economic impact of the disability community. Disability:IN’s latest study estimates the disability consumer market at $675 billion and explores the experiences and perspectives of consumers with disabilities.
