In a performance space like a concert hall, the ADA requires spaces connected to performance areas to be accessible for performers with disabilities. On Tuesday, a Denver City Council committee advanced a large contract to have the backstage area of Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre improved as part of a bond initiative passed last year, including complying with the ADA's requirements for the first time. Where many other cities might have argued that providing access to an area like this is too difficult or expensive, the City of Denver decided providing access for people with disabilities was also a priority.

City officials plan to complete the project over several years without disrupting any shows at the venue. Crews will do construction work only during the venue’s five-month off-season.
