Good morning, HD50. Our campaign has unfortunately come to the end of the road as we were unable to collect a sufficient number of signatures to access the primary ballot.

I trusted our paid circulator to fulfill their contract, and for that I'm sorry because it has led us to this point.

I am sorry that I've let down all of our volunteers, donors, and supporters. None of this would've been possible without you, and I am eternally grateful for your hard work and dedication!

This has been a wonderful 6 months of meeting great people, learning about amazing organizations, and highlighting the issues that HD50 faces. The work doesn't stop today. I am not going anywhere, and I will still be very active in the community. We currently have a strike going on; there will be important questions on the ballot this fall regarding taxes and TABOR reform; and public education always needs advocacy. I will be involved in all of those things and more, and I encourage all of you to stay involved however you can as well. A lot of things need fixing, and they can't be fixed alone. I'll see you out there! ✊🏼

Love ya, HD50!

Great job out there today! I wasn't able to get time off work until Wednesday, but I was able to stop by today to donate cases of water. ¡Sí se puede!

TABOR limits the State's ability to retain excess revenue for future downturns. When revenue exceeds the TABOR cap, the surplus must generally be refunded to taxpayers. For example, in 2023-2024, the State collected roughly $1.7 billion above the TABOR limit, most of which had to be refunded rather than saved for a rainy day.

This doesn't just happen in good times. Colorado can be simultaneously faced with a budget deficit and a TABOR surplus. This happens when revenues exceed the TABOR cap but still fall short of what the legislature needs to fully fund programs.

These are still more reasons why TABOR desperately needs reformed!

Medicaid is a great program, but it consumes a huge and ever-growing portion of Colorado's budget thanks to inflation, an aging population, and legislative impacts at the State and Federal levels. As mentioned in yesterday's post, TABOR's unrealistic cap also contributes to underfunding.

This is why we need to get rid of the TABOR caps and partner with other states to negotiate drug/medical prices and create a public insurance option!

The main reason that TABOR has contributed to our current State budget crisis is because the TABOR cap grows too slowly.

TABOR limits State revenue growth to inflation plus population growth which does not keep pace with the real-world costs of running a State. Costs for key spending areas like Education, Healthcare, and Infrastructure often grow faster than the cap does.

That is why I am excited for SB26-135 which will refer a ballot question to the voters this November to raise the TABOR cap, and that money will go to fund public K-12 education. I believe this is a great start. In the legislature, I will fight to completely get rid of the cap and ensure that all of the additional funding goes to Public Education (K-Higher Ed), Healthcare, and Infrastructure!

Colorado is in a budget crisis facing an $800+ million dollar shortfall this year, and legislators are going to have to make a lot of tough decisions.

Let's be clear though, this shortfall is the direct result of a uniquely Colorado issue - TABOR. This week my posts are going to focus on Colorado's budget crisis, TABOR, and ways I plan on addressing both.

My campaign is a people powered campaign, not a Democratic Party powered campaign. That is a big difference between me and my opponent.

Because of that we will be out again tomorrow continuing to collect signatures instead of participating in the caucus process. I believe a candidate should have to knock on doors, talk to hundreds of voters, and collect hundreds of signatures to get on the ballot. My opponent thinks it's fine to get on the ballot by just convincing 30% of the few dozen people who show up to caucus.

Again, my campaign is a people powered campaign, and I can't wait to talk with folks tomorrow and earn their support.
