At approximately 1530 hrs on May 27th, 2026, the Weld County Regional Communications Center received a call reporting a residential structure fire in the 1000 block of 4th Avenue. Initial reports stated that flames were visible from the home and an adjoining power line, and that an evacuation of the building was in progress. On arrival, crews upgraded this incident to a working structure fire, then pulled an attack line and began a primary search of the structure. After clearing the first floor, firefighters made the decision to climb to the second floor from the outside and perform a search from the window, due to conditions inside preventing access to the stairs. Thankfully, with no victims found inside, crews focused on finding and extinguishing the fire, which by this time has spread to the attic space. Several cuts were made to the roof to allow heat and smoke to escape before firefighters were able to extinguish the fire. Xcel Energy technicians also assessed a fallen power line and cut power to the house to ensure the safety of those working in the area. Overhaul and gas monitoring were performed to ensure the fire was completely out and that the area was safe to occupy without protective equipment. A fire investigation concluded that the fire was accidental in nature, due to improperly discarded ci******es.
One person was treated by UCHealth EMS for smoke inhalation and was later released on-scene; no other injuries occurred as a result of this fire. The American Red Cross of Colorado responded and offered assistance to the homeowner for their displacement. We’re appreciative that the quick reporting and actions of the members of this community helped to prevent any further casualties and spread of this fire. We also appreciate our partners above and the Greeley Police Department for responding to this incident and providing assistance.
As a reminder, please ensure that smoking materials are fully extinguished prior to being discarded. Use water or an ash tray to ensure they are put out all the way before leaving them. Never smoke in bed, around medical oxygen, or when you’re tired. Please make sure you have working smoke alarms throughout your home and that you have a home fire escape plan in place. Keep walkways and stairs clear of boxes and clutter so that you can make a quick escape if needed.
