What Employers Check in a Background Check

Think background checks are just about criminal records? Think again.

• Address history
• Employment and education
• Driving and credit records
• Drug tests
• Military service
• Licenses and permits
• Social Security and work eligibility
• Even neighbor interviews

Be honest. Be prepared. And make sure your resume matches your reality.

Listing References When You Don't Think You Have Any: Ask for a Character Reference

If no one can speak to your job performance, ask for a character reference. This could be someone who knows you’re reliable, honest, or hardworking—even if they’ve never worked with you.

Examples:
• A neighbor who sees you leave for work every day
• A landlord who knows you pay rent on time
• A local shop owner you chat with regularly
• A volunteer coordinator (even if you only helped once)

Just be upfront: “I’m applying for a job and need someone who can speak to my character. Would you feel comfortable doing that?”
