Season’s greetings from the very merry team I-41 News and Wisconsin Department of Transportation Northeast Region. Wishing you all a happy holiday season and joyful New Year!
I-41 Project traffic alerts, closures and news here.
WisDOT is evaluating reconstructing 23-miles of I-41 between WIS 96 (Wisconsin Avenue) and County F (Scheuring Road) in Outagamie and Brown counties. Several improvement alternatives are being considered to help reduce congestion and update the interchanges, roadways, and bridges to current standards. The I-41 Project is important to Wisconsin and the region because it maintains and upgrades an im
portant economic link connecting the Fox River Valley with Southeast Wisconsin – two areas that contain more than half the state’s population and the majority of its workforce and manufacturing facilities.

12/24/22 at 10:45am. Today would be another day to consider avoiding the I-41 causeway over Lake Butte Des Morts in Oshkosh.
Take a look at the traffic cams/videos on days like this to see what it looks like there.

If you must travel today, please drive with caution. The road salt melting process takes more time to activate in extremely cold temperatures like these. Expect slippery conditions throughout the day.
ROAD CONDITION UPDATE: Slippery roads reported throughout the state this morning. Travel could be very difficult throughout the day as strong winds will cause blowing/drifting snow and reduced visibility. Commutes will likely be impacted through the evening. Consider delaying or postponing travel. Use 511wi.gov for the latest winter road conditions.
I-41 and WIS 441 in Outagamie County have a tow ban in effect. Tow trucks will not be permitted to remove stranded drivers until such a time Outagamie Sheriff deems it safe for tow trucks to work on the roadways.
🔴There is a Tow Ban in effect for Highways 41 and 441 in Outagamie County. This will likely be in place through Saturday. Travel safe and only if you need to in these weather conditions. ❄️
Plan ahead and take precautions now for the coming winter storm. Travel is expected to be hazardous in many areas on Thursday and Friday. Be prepared for snow, heavy wind gusts, blowing/drifting snow and deteriorating visibility.

Don’t crowd the plow! Winter maintenance crews are working hard to clear roads in all corners of the state. Please slow down and give them space.
Flashing green lights on snowplows increase visibility
December Law of the Month: Safe Winter Driving
You may notice flashing green lights on some Wisconsin snowplows this winter. A new law took effect in April allowing county and municipal snowplows to use fluorescent green warning lights in addition to red or amber lights.
The green lights can create a greater contrast than other warning lights to improve visibility, especially during snowstorms. The additional green warning lights are meant to increase safety, enhance driver awareness and improve visibility of maintenance vehicles.

Today is Snowplow Driver Appreciation Day! We send a big “THANK YOU!” to all of the people working long hours in severe weather to keep our roads safe throughout the winter season.
For more than 100 years, WisDOT’s partnership with Wisconsin’s 72 county highway departments has maintained the state’s highway system during the winter months, providing snow plowing, salting, and liquid applications.
Thank a plow driver today!

Deer are most active during evening and early morning hours. If one is looking in your headlights, don’t expect it to move.
-Headlights can confuse a deer and cause it to freeze.
-Brake firmly if you see a deer in your path.
-One long blast from your horn may frighten the deer to run away.
-If you see one deer, watch for more. They seldom run alone.

I-41 project has 14 streams (28 crossings) within its corridor. To ensure these streams connect on either side of the highway, the project works closely with the DNR and installs bridges or culverts under the roadways. The goal of a stream crossing is to maintain the stream’s flow speed and volume, allow for fish and other wildlife passage, prevent debris from catching and prevent outwash downstream.

The distance a driver can visibly see potential obstructions ahead of them varies depending on speed. This concept, referred to as Sight Distance is an important part of highway design. The chart below shows the higher the speed, the further the driver needs to see objects on the road.
Sight distance is the length along a roadway that is visible for a driver. It is the distance along a roadway where an object is continuously visible. Highway designs factor in sight distance to help account for curves, hills, and other obstructions.
Surveying is necessary during the design phase of a project to identify potential hazards and current terrain elevations. Surveying also establishes reference points construction workers use to match the existing landscape with the design plans.
