Awesome work by Brown County Emergency Management!

A great way to close out National Preparedness Month. You may not be able to tell, but we are all smiling. The US National Weather Service Green Bay Wisconsin came to our office to award us with a Certificate of Recognition for creating www.FloodinginBC.com, facilitating flood preparedness meetings with community members, creating a flood preparedness mailer, and partaking in multiple presentations on high water levels in our region. These efforts have helped us be recognized as a Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador to the National Weather Service. A big thank you to all of our community partners and stakeholders. Without you, our efforts would be for nothing. We wouldn't have people attending our meetings, presentations, and steering traffic to the website without your participation, so thank you all.

Did you know there is a way to provide 911 with critical information in the event you need to call us?

RapidSOS is a product that we utilize at Brown County Public Safety Communications. They have created a new service that allows people to create a free, opt-in, Emergency Health Profile. Your profile associates critical medical information with your cell phone number so that when you call 911, your medical information appears on the dispatcher's screen.

Green Bay Metro Fire Department

August 13th, 2006

14 years ago on this day, Green Bay Fire Department was dispatched to a house fire on Edgewood Drive at 12:24 PM. Little did anyone know, lives would be forever changed and we would lose one of our own from this fire.

Station 5 units were first to arrive on scene, heavy smoke could be seen coming from the home. Crews were given tasks upon arrival and everyone went to work. Engine 5 entered the front of the building with a hose line in hopes to quickly extinguish the fire. Ambulance 5, who was staffed by Lt. Wolff and Firefighter Brinkley-Chaudoir on that day, entered the structure shortly after Engine 5 to perform search and rescue. Within seconds, a section of the first floor collapsed. Lt. Wolff and Firefighter Brinkley-Chaudoir were in the area of the collapse and fell approximately 10 feet in the basement, which was fully involved with fire. During the collapse, a dividing wall in the basement physically separated the two crew members. Firefighter Brinkley-Chaudoir fell into a room with windows and was able to be rescued. She suffered a hip fracture, rib fracture, and burn injuries. Lt. Wolff fell into a room without windows and his only exit was blocked by debris. Lt. Wolff called a MAYDAY but, rescuers sadly were not able to reach him due to the intensity of the fire and that he was covered by debris. 13 hours after the fire was reported, firefighters and investigators recovered Lt. Wolff’s body.

Lt. Arnie Wolff responded to his final alarm on that dark day. So today we remember and pay tribute to Lt. Wolff, who gave the ultimate sacrifice, protecting the community he loved.

That level of commitment is almost unheard of in this profession and truly needs to be recognized. Rhonda did many things to make Brown County Public Safety Communications a better place; from donating items to the Public Education team to coming in early to clean the kitchen area. Thank you, Rhonda, for your commitment to the profession. You will be truly missed. Congratulations!

NO sirens today. Spend the time to talk with your friends, families, or coworkers about your plan!

Reminder: NO sirens today. Please talk with your families, friends, and coworkers about what you would do if you were warned of a tornado.

IF YOU ARE UNDER A TORNADO WARNING, FIND SAFE SHELTER RIGHT AWAY
-If you can safely get to a sturdy building, then do so immediately.
-Go to a safe room, basement, or storm cellar.
-If you are in a building with no basement, then get to a small interior room on the lowest level.
-Stay away from windows, doors, and outside walls.
-Do not get under an overpass or bridge. You’re safer in a low, flat location.
-Watch out for flying debris that can cause injury or death.
-Use your arms to protect your head and neck.

Have you also checked your disaster kit? Is everything still working and not expired? Now is a better time than any to check your kit.

Just A Voice
Dispatcher Poem

You don't know who I am; to you I am just a voice.
It was me who took your frantic call, when you had no other choice.

I spend many hours waiting, to help when you're in need.
"Send help to me, please get them here is often what you plead.

To do my job is complex, but only a few tools are a must
Put your faith in me, I am the one that you can trust.

My ears are a necessity; my mouth a mighty sword
I must use my ears to listen, and then choreograph every word.

I am the protector of this land; I take pride in what I do
I am here to listen and do what is best for you.

The day you place a call to me, might be the worst day you ever had
At least today you know, I too was feeling sad.

I take your problems home with me, I know that's not so good,
But as you felt your tragedy it was by your side I stood.

I walked with you to the door, to let them into help,
I guided you to safety, when all alone you felt.

It is not often we hear praise or even simple thanks,
But the cookies and cards are plenty through police and fire ranks.

The day you placed your call, and I picked up the phone
I hope I made you feel safe and showed you you're not alone.

Remember who I am, I am not just a voice
I am the 911 Dispatcher you called when you had no other choice.
