Career Advice From the Top...
We asked Tom: What is the most important skill you've developed throughout your career?
"Without question, the most valuable skill I’ve developed is active listening. While technology, strategy, and problem-solving have all played important roles in my career, I’ve learned that truly understanding people is what drives the best outcomes.
Early on, I believed my greatest value came from quickly identifying and delivering a technical solution. Over time, I discovered that moving too fast often meant making assumptions before fully understanding the challenge. Even the most well-intentioned solution can miss the mark if it’s built on an incomplete understanding of the need.
Today, whether I’m working with customers, vendors, business partners, or teammates, I focus first on listening to understand. One practice I rely on is saying, 'Let me repeat what I believe I heard you say…' This simple step creates alignment, uncovers misunderstandings, and ensures everyone feels heard. More importantly, it transforms conversations into true collaboration.
Active listening is more than hearing words—it’s seeking clarity, building trust, and creating stronger connections. By listening carefully and validating understanding before taking action, I’ve been able to communicate more effectively, make better decisions, and help achieve better outcomes for everyone involved."
