Tonight we held our monthly meeting at Eisenhower Park. Much to our surprise a group of boys stopped by to check us out, we explained, then asked them what type of things they’d like to see happening in their neighborhood. Some of their ideas were a bit lofty for our group, but their enthusiasm was contagious. We compiled a list of future neighborhood events. Thanks guys for energizing us. 😊

June is Pride Month, and DCED would like to recognize the efforts of Napalese Lounge & Grille to support Green Bay’s LGBTQ community. Butch, Stacy, and Martha with Napalese are utilizing the City’s Commercial Façade Grant Program to invest in a new public mural as well as a new front door. The mural will convey a message that affirms the history, presence, and contributions of LGBTQ people in northeast Wisconsin. The new front door will replace an entry that was sealed years ago due to ongoing homophobic abuse/harassment. The new door and mural represent a new era of LGBTQ visibility and proud affirmation in Green Bay. The public is invited to join Mayor Eric Genrich and the Napalese team on August 21st for a Mural Unveiling and Door Opening Celebration. The attached image is the selected mural concept planned to be painted this summer. For more information, please visit https://www.napalese.com/lgbtq-mural.

Last but certainly not least in our Small Business Video Series is Adam Kersten from Kersten Realty. From their founding in 1982, Kersten Realty has grown their business throughout our community. May is National Historic Preservation Month and we’ve got some exciting news! This week we kicked off a multi-year, multi-phase update to the City’s Intensive Resources Survey, which was last updated in 1988. Since we have staffers younger than this survey, we thought it was time for an update. This survey determines the historical integrity of all buildings in our City, which opens properties up to additional funding resources that are for historic properties only.

How are we paying for it? The City has received $33,000 in Historic Preservation Fund subgrants from the Wisconsin State Historic Preservation Office for the 2020 grant cycle, and an additional $50,000 for the 2021 cycle! This funding does not use taxpayer dollars, and is awarded as part of our dedication to the Certified Local Government Program.

We started Phase I of this survey update this week, concentrating on the area mapped below. This includes Northwest Railway Gardens, Fort Howard Neighborhood Association , Seymour Park Neighborhood Association, Tank Park Neighborhood Association, and Olde Norewood Neighborhood Associations. If you see a slow-moving white Volkswagen SportWagen driving through your neighborhood taking photos, it’s just our surveying crew. Feel free to stop them to ask questions, or to share stories about your house! You can also contact Stephanie Hummel at [email protected] with any questions or stories. #ThisPlaceMatters
