Thank you Green Bay Metro and Wello , this is such an important partnership. Unfortunately, many pedestrian (walker) vs. motor vehicle (car, truck) crashes happen near transit (bus) stops. After all, walking is how people get to and from the bus. Motorists: watch for, and yield to pedestrians near transit stops. Bus riders, be aware of your surroundings when walking to and from the bus and watch out for cars.

Time for a New Tandem

We did a thing this past week and bought a new tandem bicycle! See our blog below for the whole story, it has been quite an adventure.

Sometimes things just line up and it is nothing short of serendipity. This past week, after twenty years and tens of thousands of miles of riding, Tracy and I bought a new tandem bicycle! We bought…

Pedestrian Crosswalk Enforcement Operations are one of the best ways I know to quickly and effectively improve motorist yielding to pedestrian behavior at crosswalks. It is also one of the best ways I know to encourage law enforcement officers to actively participate in improving pedestrian safety.

Our tandem bicycle (of Coast to Coast on a Tandem fame) made an appearance with Wisconsin State Representative Kristina Shelton Governor Tony Evers, and Representative Lee Snodgrass at the UW-Green Bay news conference this afternoon.

Today I was honored travel slightly north to join Wisconsin State Representative Kristina Shelton, Secretary Barca, State Superintendent Jill Underly and Governor Tony Evers at UW-Green Bay today to highlight the 96 million in funding for the Cofrin Technology and Education Center as well as the positives of the Governor’s budget signing earlier today.

Wisconsin cyclist hopes to improve state's bike friendliness

Woke up to this post from a friend:

"Nice segment on Spectrum 1 news this morning about your passion for cycling and bike friendly cities."

Reporter Jorge Rodas did a great job with this piece, if I do say so myself.

This article from the May 31, 1994 Green Bay Press-Gazette hangs on my office wall and I am very proud of it, minus the barefeet. Written by reporter Sean Schultz, the article is about a one-year-old Ashwaubenon (WI) company, WE BIKE, and it's 32-year-old president, Peter Flucke. 27 years later, it is fun to reread the article and see which of my bicycling predictions came true.

Over the years the company name has changed slightly to WE BIKE, etc., LLC (www.webike.org) to reflect our expansion into pedestrian issues, and the need for insurance, and Tracy joined the business fulltime in 2014, but otherwise, things are remarkably the same. We have fleshed out what we do over time;

"WE BIKE, etc. is a national consulting business spacalizes in the areas of engineering, education, enforcement, and encouragement for walking, bicycling, and healthy communities,"

Currently, we are providing expert witness services on a bicycle crash case in Hawaii, partnering with another national consulting firm on Vision Zero training for law enforcement, and working on a pedestrian and bicycle crash reporting webinar with the National Safety Council.

Locally, Peter serves on the Brown County Traffic Safety Commission and the Green Bay Safe Walk & Bike Working Group. Tracy chairs the Ashwaubenon Bicycle & Pedestrian Committee, and both are members of the Wello-Greater Green Bay Active Communities Alliance, Friends of the Fox River Trail, and Bay Shore Bicycle Club.

It's been a great ride so far, and it's not over yet. Ride and walk on!

As many of you know, Tracy was hit by a car in July of 2018. She is still dealing with the aftermath of the crash and the legal case has yet to be resolved. What you may not know is that when Kris and Doug Hanson were struck on their tandem in 2011, we received numerous calls from friends concerned that "the tandem couple hit by the car" was us. Our hearts go out to Doug and his family. This is all so unnecessary!

Do you wear a ROAD iD? We do, every time we ride, and it came in very handy when Tracy was struck. She was conscious, but couldn't remember her contact information when the responding police officer asked. She had a concussion. Fortunately, she had her ROAD iD on and handed it to the cop. I still get choked up thinking about it, but that ROAD iD brought us back together.

If you are thinking about ordering a ROAD iD please use our 20% discount code: http://road.id/WeBike. We also have one $10 gift card for the first person to send me a personal message.

May 19, 2021 Annual Ride of Silence

The Ride of Silence, founded in 2003 in Dallas, TX, is an annual international bicycle ride to commemorate cyclists killed and support those injured while riding on public roads. It helps to raise awareness among motorists, the public and decision makers of the dangers cyclists face on the roads, especially from other traffic.

In 2020, 458 Rides of Silence were recorded in 47 states, 17 countries and 6 continents. BSBC began participating in 2012 after losing 2 of our members in tragic accidents.

In August 2010, Kevin Kohrman was hit and killed during our Thursday Night Ride. Just 1 year later, in August 2011, Kris and Doug Hanson were struck while riding their tandem. Kris was lost and Doug was severely injured. Thankfully, Doug recovered and still rides with us today.

Membership in BSBC is more than just a weekly ride. It's friendships forged thru activism, community and honor. We invite you to join us.

Why there's a shortage of bikes, and how you can make yours last longer

Always nice to get quoted about bicycling stuff.

"Picking a shop should be less about price and more about feel," according to Peter and Tracy Flucke, biking columnists for the Press Times in Green Bay, Wisconsin, and co-authors of "Coast to Coast on a Tandem." "Think of it more like the relationship with your doctor and less like the one with a car dealership."

With bikes hard to come by -- parts and accessories, too -- there is no better time to make friends with your local bike shop.

We love it when we get notes from our readers!

"Hi Peter & Tracy,

I just finished reading your book about your ride across the country ("Coast to Coast on a Tandem"). It sounds like you had a ride that was many things - a challenge, fun, hard work, very tough, and lots of fun, and very rewarding!

I was able to ride across the country in to summer of 1990. My friend ... and I road from Seattle over to Portland Maine. We picked up two friends in Wisconsin at Copper Falls State Park. We went through the UP into Canada at Sault Ste. Marie. We had challenges, but not as many bike repairs or flat tires as you had. It seems our weather was also much better.

We took the shorter route because of time constraints. I got home a week before my wedding ... (We) have done lots of challenging things over the years, but we would not enjoy (tandem) biking!

Thank you for the book and for sharing the tough times as well as the good times. Let's all keep biking!

Sincerely,

Peggy"

Just a shout out to let you know how much I enjoyed your book.Saw s meme online and just thought I would share.
Our blog is active again and you know what that means, there must be a big bicycle ride on the horizon. We gathered with friends at Badger State Brewing Company here in Green Bay, WI last night to celebrate Tracy's recovery, announce our next unsupported, tandem bicycle adventure, the trip theme, and our partners. Thank you to everyone who attended the event and to all of our partners who spoke and donated the awesome door prizes. I wish I had been eligible to win. Ha. If you missed the event, no worries. Our blog will bring you up to speed on what we have planned. This will be our biggest trip yet. Enjoy!
So thankful for all or their support!
Now this is a good deal!
As cyclists, we truly appreciate the help! Hope this catches on with other car manufacturers.
This event just keeps getting better and better! Check in on Tracy's recovery (she has her second post-op visit that day), hear about our next bicycle trip, grab a great beer, and WIN VALUABLE DOOR PRIZES from some of our partners (Badger State Brewing Company, Saranac Glove Company, Road iD, Terry Bicycle Products, Pinkert Law Firm, Wello, Advanced Massage Therapy, and others). This will be fun! Please share...
I wouldn't be where I am today without my bicycle safety training from the League. Please donate! ("Coast to Coast on a Tandem," https://www.webike.org)
Tracy and I get asked often how we can afford to take two, three (five) months off to ride our tandem bicycle across the country. No, we are not rich. Instead, our answer is, "good financial planning." Just like our training plan has helped us build our physical strength and endurance over time, our financial plan has helped us develop the resources we need to do the things we want to do. Do you have a plan? Woodmen Financial Resources! "Coast to Coast on a Tandem" (https://www.webike.org)
Happy Giving Tuesday. Please consider supporting the League of American Bicyclists.
