Dick Lohnes will celebrate his 105th Birthday on May 2. Please help Dick celebrate this milestone by sending a card or note to him at PO Box 44, Green Valley, IL 61534. Dick loves receiving cards in the mail and keeps them in a basket by his chair.
Dick's life has been one of service to his community and country. Together with his wife, Vava, Dick owned and operated Lohnes Garage and Chevrolet Dealership on the southeast corner of Main and Church Streets from 1959-1980. Many still remember Lohnes Garage as the morning gathering place for a cup of coffee and conversation. Through the years, all school and community bake sales were held in the showroom. Dick also served as Fire Chief of the Green Valley Fire Department for 26 years and was a volunteer fireman for over 32 years. Dick and Vava were lifelong members of the Green Valley United Methodist Church, serving their church faithfully in many capacities.
Dick is also a veteran of World War II who served in the Army. His recollections of driving a fuel truck in Africa, Germany, France, Italy and Austria are a real history lesson.
Dick is a faithful Midwest Central sports fan and hates to miss a game!

**LEVEL 4 UPGRADE: Widespread severe weather Friday**

What to do:
📝Review safety plans
📲📻Have multiple ways to receive warnings
🕯Have an emergency kit ready
👩‍💻Monitor updates and be weather aware
🔦Prepare for power outage

The SPC has upgraded NW IL to a level 4 risk for severe weather Friday and more of IL could be added to this risk.

Severe thunderstorms will develop in Iowa/Missouri then race east into Illinois after 5PM. Prepare for power outages and tree damage.

Storms will be racing across the state at 50+ MPH so lead times may be low. Be very weather aware and have a severe weather plan in place.

Teamwork- no matter the name on the door of the truck everyone goes to work.

Forman is very fortunate to have great mutual aid partners in both Tazewell and Mason county. We appreciate all of you. The photo is from today when we went to a mutual aid call in Tazewell county. A great stop on a fire that could have been alot bigger.

Why bagpipes?

Bagpipes are often a part of firefighter and police funerals.

The history of funeral bagpipes is fairly simple though very sad.

In traditional Celtic cultures, including both Irish and Scottish, bagpipes were and still are an important part of a traditional funeral.

After the Great Potato Famine of the mid-1840s, Irish immigrants came to the United States in huge numbers.

Due primarily to racism and xenophobia Irish people were discriminated against and often allowed to only apply for the jobs nobody else wanted, the most dangerous and difficult jobs, including the jobs of firefighter and police officer.

Work-related deaths for firemen and cops were not uncommon and when one or more of these deaths would occur the Irish community would hold a traditional Irish funeral, including the mournful bagpipes.

Over the years, this tradition spread to firefighters and police officers who were not of Irish descent.

You can help your local fire departments by keeping snow at least 3 to 5 feet away from fire hydrants during this winter storm. The few extra minutes you save them if they need access to the hydrant makes a huge difference. Organize a hydrant clearing group today in your neighborhood or community!

Winter storm arrives in force to start the new year!

A strong storm system will bring areas of accumulating snow, mixed precipitation, and rain to central Illinois on New Year's Day. Precipitation is expected to increase in coverage after 6 AM Saturday. West of the Illinois River, primarily snow is expected. In this area, 5-7 inches of snow is expected. From the Illinois River to the I-55 corridor, mixed precipitation is expected. Freezing rain may be more likely in the morning before transitioning to sleet, then back to a mix of snow or freezing rain. A few tenths of sleet accumulation is possible, along with up to two tenths of ice accretion. South of I-72, primarily rain is expected, but precipitation may switch to a brief wintry mix Saturday evening. Consider postponing travel across western, central, and northern Illinois on New Year's Day as hazardous road conditions are likely. Bitterly cold air arrives by Sunday morning, with wind chills below zero west of I-55.

Peppermint, the North Pole Press Secretary, sent a message via North Star Communication. She said Santa is scheduled to arrive in the Tazewell County area around 7 p.m. on Christmas Eve.

Peppermint wanted to thank all of the children for being extra kind and good this year! She asked for all children to stay in bed on Christmas Eve. Santa caught some children peeking out of their windows at his sleigh last year. He knows when you are sleeping and knows when you’re awake.

Peppermint will send a North Star message to Tazewell County 911 - TC3 when Santa and his reindeer begin their flight to deliver Christmas gifts.

As always, make sure to leave some milk and cookies for Santa. And be sure to listen to the Tazewell County channel on the scanner app"5-0 Radio” at 7 p.m. on December 24th for dispatchers to broadcast Santa's location to local police officers, firefighters and paramedics.

The Green Valley Fire Department has received money donated from various memorials in our community. We are very appreciative of this and would like to share a piece of equipment that was purchased with the money. We have bought a TIC (Thermal Imaging Camera). A TIC is a camera that can detect infrared energy (heat) and converts it into a visual image. This is a very helpful piece of equipment due to the fact that we do not always know if a structure is unoccupied when arriving on scene. The TIC can help us during the search and rescue by turning thermal energy into a heat signature. This can let the firefighters know that it could be a person or a possible hotspot that we cannot see with our eyes. A TIC allows us to see in a smoke-filled environment or in a complete darkness area.
Since we do not always know what to expect when arriving on scene this will help keep our firefighters safe when fighting a structure fire and even afterwards.
Thank you to those families who helped make purchasing this equipment possible.
