Great information! Thank you West Central Indiana Lost Dog Recovery team!
🧡 🐾 PSA —- DRONES & LOST DOG RECOVERY 🚁 🐾
When a dog goes missing, everyone wants to help. While drones can be a valuable tool, they are not the first step in every recovery. In fact, using a drone at the wrong time can make a safe recovery much more difficult.
All experienced, knowledgeable, and skilled volunteer Lost Dog Recovery organizations throughout Central Indiana have access to trained and certified drone pilots when the time, weather, terrain, and the dog’s behavior make drone deployment appropriate. Teamwork is the only way, ALWAYS.
Why we don’t recommend immediately calling a drone:
• It can startle a frightened dog, causing it to flee farther away.
• It can disrupt the dog’s established travel and feeding patterns.
• It may push the dog out of an area where a recovery plan is already working.
• Aerial sightings do not equal containment—many dogs still require humane traps to be safely recovered.
• Flying a drone at the wrong time can delay recovery instead of helping it.
Unfortunately, many people advertising drone services respond to lost pet posts before a recovery plan is in place. While some are experienced professionals, others charge hundreds of dollars for flights that produce no results—or worse, push the dog out of the area where it had begun to settle. Sometimes into very dangerous situations. There has been instances where dogs have been hit by cars when startled by a drone.
Our goal is always the same:
Safe containment—not pursuit.
Every dog and every situation is different. That’s why we encourage owners to contact an experienced Lost Dog Recovery organization first. If a drone is the right tool, we have the resources and partnerships to bring in trained, certified drone pilots at the appropriate time.
Finding a dog is only the beginning. Bringing that dog home safely is the mission… One Clear Plan! 🧡🐾
