Do you know what an Atlatl (at-lat-l) is?
~ An atlatl point, such as the one in the first photograph from the University of New Mexico, was found during an archaeological dig at Ebbert Spring, south of Greencastle. Ebbert as in Ebb Tide.
~ Pennsylvania has dubbed Ebbert Spring a "super site."
~ The second photograph shows a possible Atlatl point in the "lower right."
~ The oldest point in the collection is a fluted Clovis Point dated 10,000 to 9,000 BCE. The Clovis Point is in the center of the top row in the photograph.
~ We are in the year 2026 - 2,026 years after the birth of Christ. Multiply that by five times to go back to 10,000 BCE.....
~ The diagrams show how to use an atlatl.
~ The PowerPoint Presentation (by the former Franklin County Chapter 27 of the PA Archaeological Association) can be seen in-person in the South Exhibit Bay in the Barn along with the premier artifacts found at Ebbert Spring.
~ Visit Ebbert Spring Archaeological Preserve & Heritage Park (12633 Molly Pitcher Highway, Greencastle, PA 7225) open daily from dawn to dusk. There is parking.
~ Allison-Antrim Museum is open Wednesday to Friday, noon to 4 pm and Saturday, 10 am to 2 pm.

Do you have a spring and spring house where you live?
~ Ebbert Spring is open dawn to dusk every day of the week.
~ The first image is of the inside of the lower level of the Ebbert Springhouse.
~ The value of natural springs increased during the French & Indian and Pontiac Wars.
~ Many of the large land owners among the early settlers in Antrim Township (there was no Greencastle at the time) were farmers.
~ Distances could be great between neighbors.
~ By constructing a building (often of limestone in this area) over a spring, it would provide a family with safety from raids during the French & Indian and Pontiac Wars and would guarantee that the spring water could not be tampered with by poisoning.
~ In the lower level of the Spring Houses "troughs" were built below the floor level into which spring water would flow and exit under the foundation.
~ Besides the fresh water for drinking, settlers could also keep their milk and butter from spoiling because of the cool, constant temperature (50 degrees in this geographical area) of the spring water, which never varies year round.
~ Springs have different temperatures according to their depth and speed (gallons/minute).

***Click & increase the image for better viewing. The family of Bo & Nell, the first family of geese to visit Ebbert Spring, has grown by generations! Geese are known for their strong family bonds and do typically live in family groups, known as broods or gaggles, especially during breeding season and migration. (Ebbert as in Ebb tide. Bo & Nell were named after the late Al Bonnell - Bo Nell)

Hey everyone! As the spring blooms fade the trees at the park are leafing out and are full of bird song. The trails are freshly cut and are a great place for a gentle stroll!

Please note there are cones blocking some of the entrances at the end of the lane as construction on the intersection continues—this is to prevent trucks from using the lane as a turnaround since they will get stuck (trust us, we’ve seen it happen!). If you need to move a cone a bit for access that’s fine, but generally the middle lane is open for cars coming and going.
