72 years ago this week, production began at the IBM Plant #5 in Greencastle, Indiana on May 10, 1954.
The dominant Putnam County employer for over 30 years, the local IBM Plant initially reconditioned IBM's electric accounting machines and manufactured data punch cards. As IBM's largest card & paper forms production site, there were about 1,000 employees by the late 1960s. "If laid end to end, a year's capacity of card production would stretch almost 5 round trips around the moon."

250+PUTNAM COUNTY, IND. from the PCPL Archive -
As we approach Semiquincentennial celebrations this July, let's look back at an early 4th of July celebration!
Narratives of Semicentennial or "Jubilee of Freedom" celebrations in 1826 are rare in west-central Indiana. After all, Indiana had only been a state for 10 years and Putnam County was only 5 years old!
However, Terre Haute's WESTERN REGISTER of July 15, 1826 contained a detailed article of Liberty Grove's July 4th festivities for "The 50th Anniversary of American Independence." ("Liberty-Grove" was noted in Otter Creek Township of Vigo County, about 30 miles west of Greencastle.)
In "true Republican style," there were canons fired, parading military companies, an assembly with orators, honors for local surviving patriots of the Revolution, picnics and many toasts (see article below).
Watch for more past celebration info here in the coming weeks or visit the Archive in the Putnam County Public Library!
