Over the last week, GFD shifts worked with Crossroads Training LLC and Instructor Jon Shackelford for three days of hands on vehicle extrication training.

The focus was on vehicle accidents involving vehicles on their sides and roofs. Crews worked through stabilization, proper strut placement, roof removals, and door removals.

It was an excellent three days of training that challenged our crews and provided valuable, hands-on experience.

A huge shout out to Mike Johnson for providing us with multiple vehicles to work with. We simply couldn’t do this type of realistic extrication training without your support!

The Greencastle Fire Department is pleased to welcome Area 30 Career Center intern Elijah Frank.

This marks the third year that GFD has partnered with Area 30 to provide students with the opportunity to gain real-world experience in the fire department. Throughout the year, interns participate in training, respond to emergency calls, and assist with the daily operations of the firehouse.

Last year, through the Area 30 Fire and Rescue program, Elijah earned his Firefighter I certification. This year, he will continue his professional development at GFD as he works toward his Firefighter II and Strategies and Tactics certifications.

Programs like this provide students with valuable experience while helping develop the next generation of firefighters and emergency responders.

We’re proud to continue our partnership with Area 30 and look forward to supporting Elijah as he continues to learn, grow, and take the next steps toward a career in the fire service.

Today was a big day for Reserve Firefighter Orion Bowser as he successfully passed his trauma assessment and earned his NREMT certification.

Last year, Orion started with GFD as one of our Area 30 Intern firefighters and currently serves as a Reserve Firefighter.

Over the summer, he worked as a lifeguard at the city pool, put in countless hours at the firehouse, all while working toward his NREMT certification.

We’re proud of the work Orion has put in and the progress he continues to make. His hard work, dedication, and willingness to learn are qualities we value in a Greencastle firefighter.

Yesterday, A-shift had the opportunity to help with the House Reveal Ceremony at Tzouanakis Intermediate School!

We were honored to be part of such a special event and to help celebrate this exciting moment with the students and staff.

We’re proud to support our schools and be involved in opportunities that make a lasting impact on our kids and our community.

C-Shift spent the morning training on search operations and hose line advancement in an acquired structure.

Training in real-world environments is one of the most valuable tools we have to prepare our crews for the challenges they may face. While nothing can completely replicate the uncertainty of an emergency scene, acquired structures allow our firefighters to practice critical skills, build confidence, and improve teamwork in conditions as close to the real thing as possible.

We appreciate the opportunity to train, learn, and continue improving our service to the community.

Training Notice

The Greencastle Fire Department will be conducting training today at 203 South Indiana Street.

Residents in the area may see fire trucks, firefighters, and smoke coming from the structure. Please be advised there is no emergency — any smoke visible is controlled training smoke being used as part of our training.

Training like this allows our members to practice critical skills in realistic environments so we can continue providing the highest level of service to our community.

Thank you for your understanding and support of the Greencastle Fire Department.

July was a busy month for the Greencastle Fire Department. While many saw us at community events, our firefighters were also responding to emergencies, training, and preparing to better serve our community.

Throughout the month, we:

🚒 Responded to 173 emergency calls.
🚒 Implemented new training drills across all shifts to enhance our readiness and skills.
🎆 Covered the Fourth of July fireworks and held our annual department family cookout.
🚒 Celebrated the arrival of our new engine with a traditional Push-In Ceremony.
🍋 Hosted Lemonade & Fire Trucks in support of the Isaiah 117 House.
🇺🇸 Participated in the Putnam County Fair Parade.
🏡 Conducted several fire prevention details throughout the community.
🎡 Provided two days of coverage at the Putnam County Fair.
🎤 Helped ensure a safe Rodney Atkins concert.
👮🤝 Participated in Putnam County Community Night Out.

The success of these efforts would not have been possible without the outstanding teamwork of our firefighters and the strong partnerships we share with public safety agencies, community organizations, volunteers, and event organizers. We are grateful to work alongside so many dedicated partners who help make these events successful while allowing us to continue providing professional emergency response throughout the month.

Whether we’re responding to emergencies, training to be better prepared, or engaging with our community, our mission remains the same: To serve the citizens of Greencastle and Greencastle Township with Honor, Accountability, and Compassion.

Shoutout to everyone who stopped by our booth at the Putnam County Community Night Out!

Whether you picked up fire prevention supplies, received a smoke detector, checked out our new fire engine, talked fire safety with our firefighters, or just stopped by to say hello—we truly appreciate your support.

The weather wasn’t the best, but it certainly didn’t keep our community away. Thank you for making it another great Community Night Out! We enjoyed seeing everyone!
