Welcome to the Old Putnam County Jail!
Nestled at 123 W Washington St, this imposing structure served the county from 1878 to 1995. The current structure built in 1939 (After Dillinger and his gang robbed the bank across the street) under the direction of a former Alcatraz superintendent, it featured advanced locking systems and rugged architecture—reflective of mid‑20th-century correctional design. Similar to those at Alcatraz Island.

After decades of service, a new facility opened in 1995, and the jail on Washington Street was decommissioned. Now, we’re thrilled to announce that this historic site will soon be open for tours, photography and paranormal investigations. Whether you’re drawn by its role in local justice history or intrigued by tales of spirits in old cell blocks, this venue invites you to explore its stories… if you dare.
