Our Post wishes all of you a happy Thanksgiving and many blessings this holiday season!
The Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) has a rich tradition of serving veterans, military families, and their local communities. The VFW traces its roots back to 1899 when veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) founded local organizations to secure rights and benefits for their service: Many arrived home wounded or sick.

There was no medical care or veterans' pension for them, and they were left to care for themselves. In their misery, some of these veterans banded together and formed organizations with what would become known as the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. After chapters were formed in Ohio, Colorado and Pennsylvania, the movement quickly gained momentum. By 1915, membership grew to 5,000; by 1936, membership was almost 200,000. Since then, the VFW's voice had been instrumental in establishing the Veterans Administration, creating a GI bill for the 20th century, the development of the national cemetery system and the fight for compensation for Vietnam vets exposed to Agent Orange and for veterans diagnosed with Gulf War Syndrome. In 2008, VFW won a long-fought victory with the passing of a GI Bill for the 21st Century, giving expanded educational benefits to America's active-duty service members, and members of the Guard and Reserves, fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. The VFW also has fought for improving VA medical centers services for women veterans. Besides helping fund the creation of the Vietnam, Korean War, World War II and Women in Military Service memorials, the VFW in 2005 became the first veterans' organization to contribute to building the new Disabled Veterans for Life Memorial, which opened in November 2010. Annually, the nearly 2 million members of the VFW and its Auxiliaries contribute more than 8.6 million hours of volunteerism in the community, including participation in Make A Difference Day and National Volunteer Week. From providing over $3 million in college scholarships and savings bonds to students every year, to encouraging elevation of the Department of Veterans Affairs to the president's cabinet, the VFW is there.
Mission: NO ONE DOES MORE FOR VETERANS

Our Post wishes all of you a happy Thanksgiving and many blessings this holiday season!
Today is International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day. Veterans have a significantly higher suicide rate than other adults in the U.S. This means Veterans are also more likely to have known someone who took their own life. Uniting for Suicide Postvention (USPV) helps make sense of a suicide loss. The program connects survivors with resources to help them work through powerful and unique emotions specific to this type of grief. Visit this website for information: https://www.blogs.va.gov/VAntage/78063/postvention-va-offers-support-suicide-loss/
Uniting for Suicide Postvention (USPV) provides resources for anyone affected by suicide, regardless of their connection with the military.
Thank you to everyone who visited us and donated, we had a very successful poppy distribution on Wednesday! Once again our community does not disappoint when it comes to supporting Veterans ❤️🇺🇸
This Veterans Day, please consider visiting our Post members at the Franklin, Greendale or Greenfield Sendik's locations from 10:00AM - 4:00PM where they will be distributing poppy flowers. You will have the opportunity to donate to our Post so we can continue to support Veterans throughout Wisconsin and surrounding areas. As many of you are aware, Greendale VFW Post 10519 is very active in the Wisconsin Veteran community and we rely 100% on donations through various fundraisers throughout the year. Like many organizations in 2020, our Post has been unable to hold the same level of activities, thus is unable to help support Veteran-focused organizations in our community to the level we are used to.
Below are program focuses for our post:
-Our main source for donations is the Milwaukee VA Hospital where we are able to designate where the donations go. Previously the Post has chosen palliative care, the Women's Center, Fisher House, Christmas donations to needy veterans programs monitored by VA social workers, and adult day care for donations.
-We also provide funds to the Wisconsin VFW Unmet Needs program which is available to any Veteran or Veteran's family in need including currently-serving Military families. It is not, however, a "hand out" program. The assistance this program offers is directed toward financial assistance that could help pay bills that provide for basic life needs.
-Other donations have been the annual Wreaths Across America where the Post purchases Christmas wreaths to lay on Veteran graves at Woods National Cemetery. The program is held each December on National Wreaths Across America Day, with the mission being to Remember, Honor and Teach by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies at Arlington National Cemetery, as well as at more than 2,100 additional locations in all 50 U.S. states, at sea and abroad.
-We also support the VFW National Home for Children in Michigan where families may live for up to 4 years. They work to identify what they need and want to accomplish, such as securing housing, education, learning how to be active and handle basic needs. Each family works with a case worker who helps them through the process.
-Plus many other local Veteran-related charities and community organizations, such as sponsoring Boy Scout Eagle Scout projects.
