We are excited and thankful to announce that we have been selected to receive approximately $50,000 in grant funding through this program. We will be purchasing 4 sets of turnout gear(helmets, hoods, coats, pants, boots) and 12 portable radios for our firefighters with the funds received through the VFEAT program. We appreciate our legislators who voted to fund this program and the TN Department of Commerce and Insurance who administers/manages the grant. This award will help keep our firefighters safe by providing NFPA compliant gear and portable radios for on scene communications.

We have installed chains on an engine and a tanker in preparation to respond to incidents during the snowstorm. Our response area includes terrain that has an elevation change of over 3000 ft, and this snowstorm is expected to create dangerous conditions throughout that entire area.

We encourage residents to stay home when possible, and to not take any unnecessary risks by travelling on snow-covered roadways.

Take precautions to not overload electrical outlets. Plug heaters directly into an outlet. Do not plug a heater into an extension cord or power strip. Check smoke alarms to make sure they are operable. If using candles, keep them on a flat, noncombustible surface away from combustible materials.

Stay in the kitchen while cooking on the stove. Unattended cooking is a leading cause of structure fires.

Keep cell phones charged in case of power outages. Never operate an electrical generator inside a house, including a basement or attached garage.

We hope everyone stays safe and warm during this cold, snowy weekend.

At approximately 4:15 this morning, South Greene Firefighters responded to a single vehicle crash in the 2300 block of W Allen's Bridge Rd. A vehicle had left the roadway and struck multiple trees before coming to rest in a drainage ditch. The driver, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, was transported by Greene County EMS with apparent minor injuries.

Other agencies on scene were the Greene County Sheriff's Dept and Greeneville Emergency and Resue Squad.

Fun fact of the day: Smoke alarms save lives. Due to the amount of synthetic materials in homes now, residential house fires are far more deadly. You can DRASTICALLY reduce your odds of injury or death by having working smoke alarms in your home. If your smoke alarm has a battery that can be changed out, go ahead and do that today. If you don’t have working smoke alarms, reach out to the fire department in your area. Many departments have smoke alarms that are free of charge.

On Thursday evening at 819 pm, the South Greene Volunteer Fire Dept was dispatched to a motor vehicle collision in the 11000 block of the Asheville Hwy. On arrival, firefighters found a single vehicle had crashed into a steep ravine in a sharp curve at the foot of the mountain. One male patient was found lying partially outside the driver's side window.

Firefighters, along with Rescue Squad volunteers and EMS personnel constructed a pulley system to move the patient to the roadway. The patient was secured to a sked stretcher and hoisted approximately 50ft to the roadway. Afterward, the patient was moved to an ambulance and transported to a landing zone at South Greene High School. A Highlands air medical helicopter transported the patient to the Johnson City Medical Center.
