Greeneville Water Commission The Greeneville Water & Light Commission, d.b.a.

The Greeneville Water Commission(GWC), was officially Chartered on June 13, 1911 , and the first 3 Water Commissioners were elected to Office. The GWC currently provides water and sewer services to approximately 10,000 customers, as well as providing water to 4 Utility Districts; Glen Hills, Old Knox, Chuckey and Cross Anchor, and to the Mosheim Water Department. The Greeneville Water Commission's

goal is the same today as it was when the Water Commission was Chartered in 1911, and that is -- to provide water of the highest quality to our customers at the lowest possible cost.

There is a 12" water line break on Church Street. Water is valved off from above York Drive to Y Street. Crews are on site repairing the break. There may be customers affected on Church Street from the York Drive area to Y Street.

On Thursday September 11, GWC will have Hope Road closed from Temple St to the Hopeville/Dogwood intersection. Road closure will happen at 8 am and remain closed until the work is complete. We apologize for any inconveniences

The Greeneville Water Commission will have water off for approximately three hours tomorrow beginning at 8:00am on Main Street between Depot and Summer. This work is to put a valve in prior to TDOT paving later this month.

When outside temperatures drop below freezing, water pipes in homes with little or no insulation are likely to freeze and break. A 1/8" crack in a pipe can spew out more than 250 gallons of water a day!
Tips to prevent frozen pipes:
1. Disconnect outside garden hoses
2. Open cabinet doors to allow heat to get to piping under sinks and vanities near exterior walls.
3. Run a small trickle of water at vulnerable faucets
If you suspect your water pipes have frozen, please contact the GWC to get your water turned off at the main.

We have had customers call in because we had to send out public education about lead service lines. We do not have any lead that we know of (and we have checked every meter in our system) but we do not know what type of service line materials that the homeowner has on their side of the meter. We are asking customers who received a letter to please contact us if they know what type of material that they have and we will update it accordingly in the database. This is an EPA requirement that any unknown service line materials on either the distribution side or customer side have to be sent public education. I will forward a copy of the letter that has been sent out to approximately 2300 of our customers. The number is also incorrect in the letters. It should be 423-638-3148.

The Greeneville Water Commission along with their utility partners ( Chuckey ud, Cross Anchor ud, Glen hills ud, Old Knoxville ud, Town of Mosheim) would like to convey that they have met all sampling requirements per TDEC and the boil water advisory for Greene County can be lifted immediately!. Each provider has taken more samples than required by TDEC and all bacteriological results are negative and the chlorine residuals were satisfactory to achieve disinfection throughout the distribution system. Thank you for your patience during this unprecedented event!

DRINKING WATER WARNING

BOIL YOUR WATER BEFORE USING

The Greeneville Water Commission has experienced a significant loss of water pressure in the entire water system and its wholesale customers due to the loss of our water intake due to catastrophic flooding of the Nolichuckey River. As a precautionary measure we are asking customers to boil water before using for consumption. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience while we work to resolve this problem.


What does this mean? What should I do?

 DO NOT DRINK THE WATER WITHOUT BOILING IT FIRST. Bring all water to a boil, let it boil for one (1) minute, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice. Boiling kills bacteria and other organisms in the water.

 Loss of system pressure can introduce disease-causing organisms into the water system. These organisms include bacteria, viruses, and parasites, which can cause symptoms such as nausea, cramps, diarrhea, and associated headaches. The symptoms above are not caused only by organisms in drinking water. If you experience any of these symptoms and they persist, you may want to seek medical advice.

 People with severely compromised immune systems, infants, and some elderly may be at increased risk. These people should seek advice from their health care providers about drinking water.

What is being done?

The Water System Name is actively working to fill the tanks and pressurize the water lines. Once system pressure is restored, bacteriological tests will be conducted throughout the affected areas. We will inform you when tests show no bacteria and you no longer need to boil your water.

Please share this information with all the other people who drink this water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses). You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail.

We are so glad to report that we are a step closer to restoring water service. Crews from the GWC, our utility district partners, and crews from the Town of Greeneville are working to pressurize our system. We have worked all diligently to get service back. We appreciate all of the kindness, compassion, good food and assistance from everyone. Please know that we appreciate all of the offers for assistance as well. We had a contingency plan in place and our team made it happen! I cannot brag on them enough. Those guys and gals care so very much about this community. Thank you and may we always appreciate the importance of water in our lives!
