Greene County Schools Family Resource Center

Greene County Schools Family Resource Center The Family Resource Center bridges the gap between home, school & community. We provide resources and support to help children succeed in school.

What is the Family Resource Center? Many of Tennessee's children come to school unprepared to learn. A child living with poverty, hunger, homelessness, abuse, neglect, loss, mental illness, substance abuse or family conflict is unlikely to succeed academically and socially in school. Schools are not equipped to address these issues. Additionally, the social service delivery system may be fragmente

d, confusing or inaccessible to those needing help. The Family Resource Center (FRC) program, administered by the TN Dept. of Education, was created in 1992 to help local education agencies to coordinate state and community services to better meet the needs of families with children. The FRC is located at Chuckey Elementary and provides outreach to all Greene County Schools. Funding is provided by the State of Tennessee Department of Education with a local match from the Greene County Board of Education and United Way of Greene County. One of our goals is to provide an active advisory council. Our advisory Council is comprised of parent, school and community representatives with parents making up at lease 50 percent. Our FRC services include: clothes, coat, toiletries and school supplies closets, food pantry, resource and referral to community organizations, and a variety of free parenting materials. We also coordinate the Food for Kids program for all Greene County elementary and middle schools and the Mobile Food Pantry in partnership with Second Harvest. It is imperative a students needs are met so they are ready to learn when they get to school. Our ultimate goal is to see the students of Greene County graduate and go on to become productive citizens. Please note that this page is for informational purposes only. Looking for ways to get your kids to help around the house? Here are some simple, age-appropriate chores for every age group!

A few words to address some of the concerns I've gotten in the past:

- This list contains suggestions of tasks that your kids CAN do. That doesn't mean that they need to do ALL of them, ALL of the time, or that they should forgo doing school work, seeing friends or other activities in favour of doing chores. You get to decide what works for your child, schedule and family.

- The ages provided are just a guideline. Children develop at different paces, and your child may be ready to do certain tasks sooner, or later, than the chart suggests. As their parent, you know best what your child is capable of.

- Assigning chores to your child doesn't mean that you won't need to be involved, or that you won't need to do certain tasks alongside them. The goal is not to have your child do things FOR you—it is to give them a sense of accomplishment, and to teach them the skills that they will need when they're grown. Kids are capable of SO much when provided with the right guidance.

- There is a difference between teenagers watching their siblings for 20 minutes while their parents go to the store, and asking them to raise their younger siblings. The former can be fine depending on your children's age and maturity level; the latter is not, and I would never advocate it.

Always remember—every family is different, and you get to decide what is right for yours!
