We’ve been looking back at our two Giveaway Days this year and wanted to take a minute to share just how much this program has been able to do.

At our Spring Giveaway Day, 228 people came through and took advantage of the program. Then, at our Back to School Giveaway Day at the end of July, another 237 individuals were able to find clothing and other items they needed, completely FREE.

That means 465 people in our community have benefited from Giveaway Day this year!

And the really cool part is that this program is completely community driven.

It starts with you. Community members donate clothing and other items they no longer need. Our amazing volunteers then spend hours sorting, organizing and folding everything. Then we open our doors and let our neighbors take what they need, at no cost.

It really is that simple:

You donate. ❤️
Our volunteers organize. ❤️
Your neighbors benefit. ❤️

We are so incredibly thankful to everyone who has donated, volunteered, shared our events or helped spread the word. These numbers wouldn’t be possible without all of you.

As we look ahead to our next Giveaway Day, we’d love to keep the donations coming! If you have gently used clothing or other items your family no longer needs, please consider donating them to us.

What might be a bag of clothes taking up space in your closet could be exactly what another local family needs.

Today, Center Township had the opportunity to visit Henry Township Trustee Travis Lyall to lean a helping hand while also learning more about his township’s response to the recent heavy rains and flooding.

When flooding impacted their community, Travis and his team stepped up and opened their township office as an emergency shelter, providing a safe place for anyone who needed to get out of the flooding.

This is an important reminder of the role township government can play during times of emergency. As the level of government closest to the people, townships have a unique ability to recognize a need, respond quickly, and use the resources available to serve their community.

We know from our own experiences at Center Township that opening your doors during an emergency takes planning, teamwork, flexibility, and people willing to step up when their neighbors need them.

Congratulations to Travis and the entire Henry Township team for their hard work and dedication to their community. We appreciate the opportunity to visit, learn from one another, and continue sharing ideas about how township government can best serve Hoosiers when they need us most.

Strong communities are built when neighbors help neighbors, and public servants are willing to answer the call.

Hancock County Senior Services is happy to host a 7 workshop series on different topics that might be harder for our seniors and their caregivers to talk about.
