Attention - High School Seniors of the graduating class of 2020! Lots of planning and preparations are being made this time of year for the holiday season. Parents and graduating seniors of 2020 are also planning and preparing for new adventures for the future of their young adult. Applications are available now for the Conservation Districts of Iowa Scholarships. CDI is partnering with local Soil and Water Conservation Districts to foster the higher education endeavors of Iowa students interested in conservation and agriculture by offering scholarships. Iowa High School Class of 2020 students pursuing programs of study in any field of conservation or agriculture qualifies for the Conservation Scholarship. While this is a wide field and many studies qualify, preference will be given to students pursing programs of study in conservation. The scholarship must be used for the student's first year of college education. The Adair County SWCD encourages Seniors of 2020 to carefully complete the attached application (attached) and mail or bring it in to the Adair SWCD office located at 705 NE Sixth Street, Greenfield, by Friday, February 14, 2020.

Introducing Abby Hansen, the NRCS Soil Conservationist in the Greenfield NRCS/Adair SWCD Office. I grew up north of Dallas Center, Iowa, on my family's farm where I continue to live and help run today. We grow corn, soybeans, and alfalfa/grass hay. We also run a fall and spring cow calf herd, a farrow to finish hog operation, and a commercial sheep herd. I graduated this past May from iowa State University where I received a Bachelor of Science in both Agronomy and Environmental Science. While at Iowa State, I had the opportunity to complete internships with Heartland Cooperative, Warren County NRCS and Linn County NRCS. I also coached volleyball at Nevada High School for two years while at Iowa State. In my free time I enjoy farming, showing livestock and playing/coaching volleyball and basketball. I am excited to be here in Adair County and work with landowners to develop conservation practices on their farms.

We had so much fun working at the NRCS/IDALS/SWCS booth yesterday for Ragbrai in Adair County. Our booth was set up at the Jesse James Historical site west of Adair. These 3 organizations partner up every year for Ragbrai, and so many riders told us they look forward to stopping at the booth each year. Maybe it's because we give away free bananas and provide postcards, which we stamp and send for them. So many great stories and conversations about soil conservation and water quality. It was a great day for the riders, it was a little windy but was a nice cool morning. #Bananas4RAGRAI

COVER CROP BENEFITS: Nitrate losses from Iowa cropland can find its way to surface waters through surface runoff and tile. Studies show that as much as 80% of these losses can occur during the winter fallow period and into the spring. Studies also have shown that a winter cover crop of Cereal Rye can reduce the total nitrate loading in drainage systems by 55%. Some of this nitrogen will be available to the following crop and most of the rest is stored in the soil organic matter.
