It is budget season once again and schools in Franklin County and across the state are facing financial conditions that are forcing them to make cuts they don’t want to make in personnel, programs or other essential services. If you’ve met Ms. Schroeder, you likely know she is a voracious reader, reading between 50-75 books a year. Her favorite genres are fantasy, science fiction and nonfiction, but regularly reads other genres as well. In fact, Ms. Schroeder belongs to two book discussion groups, the GHS staff book group, which chooses a different theme each year, and a nature book club through Forbes Public Library in Northampton. Right now Ms. Schroeder is reading three books: Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon - a standalone epic fantasy novel; Song of Homana part of the Chronicles of Cheysuli series by Jennifer Roberson, which Ms. Schroeder is listening to as a comfort read; and an autobiography titled “In Between” by Mark Morrison-Reed, which Ms. Schroeder is reading as part of her Unitarian Universalist worship committee book study. She enjoys reading in the morning with coffee and says if the book is really good she doesn’t want to stop reading to get in the shower. Her favorite series is The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, including The Hobbit because it was the first chapter book she owned (and still does), a gift from her Aunt Ruthie. Ms. Schroeder recommends these two books to students: Eragon by Christopher Paolini because it is a good beginner fantasy series, which the author started writing when he was just 15 years old, and Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir, a science fiction book that was recently turned into a movie, which also happens to be Ms. Schroeder’s favorite book that’s been turned into a movie. Her advice to students about reading is to set goals for how much time you read, ask your librarian for recommendations for good books, and “any reading counts as reading, whether it is graphic novels or audiobooks, it all counts.” Thanks for sharing your love for books, Ms. Schroeder, and keep reading! ~ Ms. Po***ck, Librarian

Sophia is a 10th grade student at Greenfield High school who participates in Drama Club and Library Club. Sophie’s love for reading started when she was young - her mom would read her to sleep every night, and now, she finds it enjoyable. She loves reading all the time, but especially when she’s in bed. Her favorite genre to read is romance, and a favorite author of hers is Jane Austen, who wrote Sense and Sensibility, the book that Sophie is reading now. Her favorite book is Pride and Prejudice, also by Jane Austen. Sophie likes Austen’s writing style and characters. Another book by Austen, Emma, is the book that Sophie would recommend to others because “Emma is a very good character for her time.” The worst book she’s read was the ancient Greek tragedy play Antigone because it was “so complicated for no reason.” Sophie has always wanted to read The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chobsky, which maybe she will borrow from the GHS library. Thanks for talking with us, Sophie, and keep reading! ~ Ash B., grade 12

Esther is an active student at Greenfield High School who participates in both Library Club and Key Club. She enjoys reading a lot, especially fantasy, science fiction, and dystopian stories. Right now, she is reading Project Hail Mary, which fits well with her favorite genres as it is science fiction. She doesn't have just one favorite book, but her top three are The Hunger Games, The Maze Runner, and A Court of Thorns and Roses, because she thinks they are very well written and engaging. Interestingly, Esther says she never really hated a book since she can always find something good in every story. The book that really got her into reading was The Maze Runner. Although she read before, this book made reading much more exciting and helped her feel like she was in a completely different world. It's also the book she would recommend to others because it's fast-paced and has a strong plot. Esther prefers reading at home in a cozy corner of her room. She can read at any time of the day, but she especially enjoys reading in the afternoon and at night. One book she always wanted to read is Dune, the classic science fiction series by Frank Herbert. She has already seen the movies and is interested in the story, but finds the writing style a bit challenging. Overall Esther's love for reading continues to grow as she explores new and exciting worlds through books. ~ Leni K., grade 11
