Franklin County has 16, soon to be 17, municipal food waste compost programs! Can you find a Franklin County transfer station food waste drop off pictured in this statewide post from MassDEP's RecycleSmart? ♻✅💚

We're bananas 🍌 about the fact that in 2025, 184 cities and towns in MA had some kind of food waste collection program. These programs kept tons of food waste (23,732 tons, to be exact) OUT of the trash!

Got Hazardous Waste? Residents of 26 towns can safely dispose of old or unwanted herbicides, pesticides, oil-based paints and stains, motor oil, automotive fluids, pool chemicals, and more at our annual Household Hazardous Waste Day: Saturday, September 19, 2026. FREE for the residents of 24 towns.

Registration is required between August 12 and September 9, at: https://franklincountywastedistrict.org/Hazardous-Waste. Participants will be assigned an appointment time to bring waste to the collection; an appointment time, location and instructions will be provided by mail after registration is processed. Event locations are Greenfield Community College and Orange Transfer Station.

The participating towns are Athol, Barre*, Bernardston, Buckland, Charlemont, Colrain, Conway, Deerfield, Erving, Gill, Hawley, Heath, Leverett, Montague, New Salem, Northfield, Orange, Petersham, Phillipston, Rowe, Royalston, Shelburne, Sunderland*, Warwick, Wendell, and Whately.

*Barre and Sunderland residents must pay to participate in the 2026. collection. Greenfield and Leyden residents are not eligible; call 413-772-2438 for disposal information.
