This past week was a big one for L1963. Our Union president Jeremy Holm, as well as the Southeast Fire Fighters Caucus, hosted the 85th Professional Fire Fighters of Wisconsin convention. We wanted to thank President Holm for his part in putting together this years convention. President Holm has been working on this event for months to insure it exceeds expectations. Which it did!

We would also like to recognize our “Red Caps” ,all from L1963, who helped with a lot of the behind the scenes work at convention and in the hospitality rooms. These guys cooked meals for over 200 and worked tirelessly throughout the night to make the event successful. L1963 had almost 25% of its entire Union at this event. Which shows the full dedication of our members to our Local and the PFFW.

Local 1963 would also like to recognize President Holm for his reelection as a board member of the PFFW.

Members of Local 1963 and Local 215 attended the annual Memorial Day ceremony and US Flag retirement at H.A.Todd American Legion Post 537. Greenfield T92 and Milwaukee T1 were utilized to raise a large US Flag in remembrance of our nation's fallen veterans.

GFD hosted it’s annual retiree luncheon this week. A well deserved and rewarding invite to the crew that paved the way for our future. Can’t thank our administration enough for keeping this tradition going year after year. Sharing old stories and laughs. As we say to our retirees, encouraging them to come visit often, “don’t be a stranger!”

Local 1963 would like to congratulate Paramedic / Firefighter Beadle for completing his probationary period. Beadle was presented his new helmet shield. Our probationary firefighters wear an orange helmet shield for their first year. This is done to easier to designate the probationary Firefighter on a fire ground or resuce calls. It allows us to keep extra eyes on the new Firefighter, for safety and teaching purposes as we know they are new to the craft. Earning the new helmet shield takes hard work and dedication and we treat it as a badge of honor. Again congratulations and keep up the good work!

Chicago Fire Department - Chicago, IL
Firefighter Altman was seriously burned over 90 % of his body while operating at a four story apartment building fire at 1757 W. North Shore Avenue, in Rogers Park on March 16, 2026. During the primary search Firefighter Altman fell through the floor into a room that was fully involved on the floor below. He was taken from the scene to Stroger Hospital of Cook County, where he passed away this morning.

We are heartbroken to share the unexpected active duty passing of Firefighter/EMT Robert Berens, who faithfully served the South Shore Fire Department for 36 years. His dedication, courage, and commitment to our community will never be forgotten.

Funeral arrangements are pending at this time. Please keep the Berens family, his brothers and sisters in the fire service, and all who knew and loved him in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.
