The DPW has been made aware of road closures occurring tomorrow on Cheapside St./Montague City road. As the road closure is being done by the Massachusetts's Department of Transportation, the Greenfield DPW is not able to provide trash and recycling collection services.

Trash and recycling collection for residences located on the closed roads will be collected on Monday, 8/31/26.

Check out the creative way the Greenfield Business Association is repurposing the old recycling bins!♻️

As a reminder, for those who do not want to keep their old bins, we are accepting drop-offs free of charge until August 31. You can bring them to the DPW Office at 189 Wells St and the Transfer Station at 86 Cumberland Rd. Additionally, Just Roots is accepting drop-offs of the bins at their white event tent located at 28 Glenbrook Dr.

Hey Greenfield! We are three months into our transition for automated recycling collection.

As a reminder, proper cart placement is essential for the automated arm to function!:

✅ Face the Street: The lid opening and metal bar must face the street.
✅ Handles Back: Wheels and handles should face your property.
✅ Spacing: Maintain at least 3 feet of clearance between the cart and objects like parked cars, mailboxes, or other containers.
✅ Placement: Carts should be placed at the end of your driveway, in the street with the wheels against the curb, or on the greenbelt between the sidewalk and the street.
✅ Lids Closed: Carts must be fully closed and not bungeed or tied down.

⚠️Are you looking to dispose of household hazardous waste? Below are options available in Greenfield.

- Motor Oil, Antifreeze, and Paint: These items are accepted at the Greenfield Transfer Station at 86 Cumberland Road. This service is available to both Greenfield residents and non-residents.
- Other Hazardous Wastes: All other hazardous wastes are accepted year-round at the Greenfield Water Facilities at 384 Deerfield Street by appointment only. This service is open to Greenfield residents only. To schedule a drop-off time for other hazardous wastes, please call 413-772-1539.

Collection days will shift forward by one day.

If your collection day is Monday, it will shift to Tuesday.
If your collection day is Tuesday, it will shift to Wednesday.
If your collection day is Wednesday, it will shift to Thursday.
If your collection day is Thursday, it will shift to Friday.

The Greenfield - MA Fire Department and the Greenfield community will honor Captain John D. Whitney with a formal uniformed funeral procession on Sunday, August 2, 2026. Captain Whitney passed away on July 22, 2026, from occupational brain cancer recognized as a Line-of-Duty Death.

The procession will begin at 1:30 PM at the Greenfield Fire Department, 41 Main Street, and will proceed along Main Street, concluding at Court Square, where funeral services will be held at Second Congregational Church.

Members of the public are encouraged to line Main Street along the procession route to honor Captain Whitney and show their support for the Whitney family and the firefighting community.

Numerous outside fire departments, law enforcement agencies, honor guards, and city officials are expected to line Court Square. The procession will feature a pipes-and-drums band, honor guards, and hundreds of uniformed firefighters marching together in tribute to Captain Whitney’s life, service, and sacrifice.

The following street closures will be in effect:
• Main Street will be closed to traffic from 1:30 PM to approximately 2 PM during the procession.
• Court Square will be closed to traffic from noon to 6 PM to accommodate funeral services and ceremonial activities.
Motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes and allow additional travel time.

About Captain John D. Whitney
Captain John D. Whitney was appointed as a full-time firefighter with the Greenfield Fire Department on February 4, 2001, and was promoted to the permanent rank of Captain on September 1, 2011. After more than 30 years of dedicated service, he retired on May 23, 2026, due to occupational cancer.

Captain Whitney was widely respected as a leader, mentor, and friend. Throughout his career, he exemplified professionalism, compassion, and unwavering dedication to serving the City of Greenfield. His leadership and commitment left a lasting impact on the department and the many firefighters who had the privilege of serving beside him.

Captain Whitney is survived by his beloved wife, Emily, and their three sons, Jake, Sam, and Cooper. The Whitney family has demonstrated remarkable strength and resilience throughout Captain Whitney’s courageous battle with cancer, and has received an outpouring of support from the community.
