Counterfeit U.S. currency is circulating locally. Businesses and residents should inspect cash carefully before accepting. If you suspect a counterfeit bill, pause the transaction, retain the note, and contact law enforcement via non emergency dispatch.

Quick Tips for Cash Handlers (10 second check)
• Feel the paper: Genuine notes have a slightly rough, fibrous feel—not smooth.
• Tilt the bill: Newer notes ($10, $20, $50, $100) show color shifting ink on the lower right numeral.
• Watermark: Hold to light—portrait watermark should match the note’s portrait.
• Security thread: A thin embedded vertical thread that glows under UV light varies by denomination.
• Microprinting: Tiny text should be crisp, not blurry.
• $100 check: Look for the blue 3D security ribbon—bells and “100s” appear to move as you tilt.
If you suspect a counterfeit:
• Don’t return the bill to the passer.
• Politely pause the transaction and call a manager.
• Handle minimally; place the note in an envelope (avoid writing/marking on it).
• Note time/date, description of the individual, and any vehicle details.
• Contact local law enforcement (use non emergency dispatch if appropriate).
