This weekend brought a high call volume and multiple significant incidents for our department across two days.
On Saturday, crews handled calls within the city before responding mutual aid to an apartment block fire in the Town of Sunderland. The on-duty shift responded with an engine, while off-duty firefighters staffed the ladder truck to assist. Our Chief and Deputy Chief also responded, working alongside Sunderland command staff to help coordinate operations. Crews operated across multiple assignments in coordination with numerous departments on scene.
Sunday, a 911 call reporting a large volume of smoke led crews to a brush fire north of Summit Avenue. With assistance of other agencies, the fire was located and determined to be approximately 1.5 acres. A first alarm was struck, bringing in mutual aid fire departments and off-duty personnel to contain the spread and complete extinguishment.
Later that evening on Sunday, the same shift responded mutual aid to a second-alarm structure fire in the Town of Leverett. An engine and the Chief responded to assist crews operating at the scene. While the structure was ultimately lost, we are thankful all occupants were able to evacuate safely.
Weekends like this underscore the strength of mutual aid, both in the support we provide and the assistance we receive. We’re proud to stand alongside our neighboring departments and commend the collective effort shown across the county.
