Over the last several days, it seems thieves are in high gear. We have received several calls of unlocked vehicles that have had items stolen from them. Also a few unlocked garages and sheds here in town also. The best way to prevent this is to lock up your vehicles and remove any valuables. Please report any suspicious activity as soon as possible.

Say hello to Max. He is a 2 year old lab. Shots are up to date, he is NOT fixed. Max likes to wonder into town... a lot. His owner would like to find him a new home, preferably somewhere he can run around, not in city limits. He is very friendly and good with other dogs. Please call Bill at 641-745-7270 if you are interested in this dog. Not only will you be helping Max, but also the Greenfield PD as we seem to deal with this dog a few times a week. This was posted with permission from the dog’s owner.

We have received several complaints of loud vehicles the past couple of weeks. State Code requires all motorized vehicles to have a muffler. One in working order. There are loud vehicles that do have a required muffler, but it is pretty obvious if there is not a working muffler on a vehicle. One way to detect a muffler is a visual inspection of the exhaust system. These vehicles in question may be stopped and inspected at anytime. If your vehicle needs repairs to fix this issue, please do so. If you have removed the mufflers, please reinstall them.

There are several cars parked in the city parking on the North side of the old Napa store( south side of the 100 block of west Iowa Street). All city parking is 48 hour only parking. 5 of these vehicles have not moved for several day. If one of these is yours, you will find a tow sticker on the window. You will have 48 hours to move your vehicle as the city has no access to clean off their parking. If it is not moved, it will be towed. A list of city parking is available at city hall, along with the parking ordinances. This also applies to the city parking lot where the recycle bins are located.

02/12/2019

Reminder! It is against city code and State code to push or blow snow into city streets. The street department is making a list as they clear the streets. Those who continue to do so, will be cited. Snow from your property should be piled on your property only, not in the street or on someone else’s property.

Driving off the roadways at the 2 City Lakes is Illegal. We have several issues with this during snow and rain. These properties are not designed as off road playgrounds for vehicles. Any vehicles observed off of the roadways will be cited, and in this case, towed at the owner’s expense. This vehicle was driving off the roadway in several locations before getting stuck.

Just a friendly reminder, per city code 136.03, snow must be removed from sidewalks within 12 hours, or the city may do so for you and send you a bill. As of today, we still have around 20 address that have not cleared thier sidewalks. Also, you may NOT blow or push snow into a public street and leave it there, per State of Iowa code 364.12(2) and city code 135.12. Thank you to those who have cleared your sidewalks.

We have taken a couple of calls about stolen Christmas decorations from yards. Please inventory any outdoor items or take pictures of them. It may help us in locating these stolen items. Report any illegal activity to law enforcement.

12/05/2018

I hope this clears up things a little bit because the red paint, no parking, and fire lane signs in the alley south Casey’s does not seem to catch the attention of many citizens. Hopefully this will :

It shall be unlawful for the owner, driver, or operator of any vehicle to park or stop such vehicle or to permit such vehicle to be parked or to stand at any time, or to place any other personal property upon or in any fire lane. Any vehicle or other personal property found to be obstructing a FIRE LANE shall be cited by any law enforcement officer with jurisdiction; this fine carries a fee of over $300.

We have been very soft with this code section since it was marked as a fire lane 2 years ago, basically letting the public get use to following the signs. I simply ask the driver to park somewhere else when I notice it, on or off duty. Pease DO NOT park in the fire lane/alley to the south of Casey’s, which is very clearly marked. It could cost you over $300.

Thank you Cardinal Glass for your donation towards our weather station! Bret Skellenger presented a check to the Greenfield Police Department for $600 on behalf of Cardinal Glass! What some of you may not know, is that Cardinal is tied in to our Tornado sirens. So when they are sounded, it sends an alert to Cardinal so they can move the employees to a designated safe are. Teamwork for public safety.

08/16/2018

On Monday, August 13th, during a public safety meeting, we discussed the issues of when to sound the Tornado sirens for high winds. After discussing several situations and how we receive our weather information, we agreed to look at purchasing a wind meter so that we have accurate and time sensitive readings. The National Weather Service reccomends to sound the sirens at wind speeds of 70mph or greater. Without the capability of real time wind speeds in our city, it would be hit and miss when to sound the alarms. The Police Department is looking at purchasing a Weather Station to mount on the tower at the Public Safety Building. This unit will give us accurate and real time information, along with the capability to upload our current weather data online. This information can be viewed by visiting a website, or from a mobile app that is free to download. The software also gives us the capability to send out emergency alerts via email for various types of weather conditions such as high wind speeds, freezing temperatures, rain rate, heat index, flood warnings and more. This will be a great addition to our public safety as it will allow us to use real time wind readings to sound our sirens when needed and send out alerts for other poor weather conditions, which will be used by the Police Department, Sheriff's Office, and the Fire Department. The total cost of the unit, software, and installation will be around $1,000. Anyone who would like to make donations, please send them to P.O. Box 95 Greenfield, IA 50849 Attention Greenfield Police Department. Donations may also be directly made at City Hall and the Police Department. If anyone has questions, feel free to contact Chief Lund at the PD. 641-743-2323.
