During this 52nd annual celebration of EMS (Emergency Medical Service) Week, observed May 17–23, we proudly recognize and honor the dedicated men and women who serve as the backbone of our emergency response system. This observance provides an opportunity to acknowledge the exceptional commitment, professionalism, and sacrifice demonstrated daily by our EMS personnel, including County Rescue, EAGLE III and our local volunteer Emergency Medical Responders (formally First Responders) from Morrison, Greenleaf, and Wrightstown.

EMS professionals are often the first on scene during medical emergencies, accidents, natural disasters, and other critical incidents. They provide lifesaving medical care, assessment, stabilization, and transport, frequently working in high pressure environments where rapid decision making, and clinical expertise are essential. Beyond their technical skills, EMS providers offer compassion, reassurance, and calm to patients and families during some of their most vulnerable moments.

Their role extends far beyond emergency response. They work collaboratively with hospitals, law enforcement, fire services, and other healthcare partners to ensure seamless care and the best possible outcomes for those they serve.

EMS Week serves as a time to reflect on the tireless efforts, long hours, and personal sacrifices made by these professionals. It is also an opportunity to express sincere appreciation for their unwavering dedication to protecting the health, safety, and well-being of our community. We are deeply grateful for their service, the countless times they have supported us, and their continued commitment to excellence in emergency medical care.

Each May, communities across the United States observe Military Appreciation Month. This is a time dedicated to recognizing the courage, dedication, and sacrifice of the men and women who have served and continue to serve in the United States Armed Forces.

For volunteer fire departments like ours, this observance holds special meaning, as the values that define military service such as discipline, teamwork, selflessness, and commitment closely mirror those embraced within the fire service. Volunteer firefighters and military service members alike answer a call that places service above self.
Whether responding to emergency incidents at home or deploying overseas in defense of the country, both groups operate under demanding and often dangerous conditions. Success in these roles depends on rigorous training, mutual trust, and the ability to work cohesively as a team under pressure.

During Military Appreciation Month, the Greenleaf Volunteer Fire Department extends our sincere thanks to all members of the military, past, present and their families who also share the burden. Their sacrifices underpin the freedoms enjoyed every day, and their example serves as an enduring inspiration to those who continue to serve.

From April 26 through May 3, the fire department will proudly participate in Light the Night for Fallen
Firefighters, a national week of remembrance sponsored by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.

Throughout this week of observance, the fire station will be illuminated in red, and the departments flag will be
respectfully replaced with the Firefighters Memorial Flag. These visible symbols serve as a powerful tribute, honoring the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities.

We invite residents, businesses, and organizations to join us in this tribute by lighting a landmark, tree, porch, home, or place of business in red during this week. Your participation helps demonstrate collective gratitude and solidarity with the fire service family nationwide.

This annual remembrance reflects the enduring values of honor, unity, and gratitude that define the fire service. It offers an opportunity for people everywhere to stand together in recognition of the courage and dedication required of those who willingly face danger to protect lives and property.

During this time, the Greenleaf Volunteer Fire Department also pauses to remember our own members who have passed away since the department’s inception as a citizen’s fire brigade in 1873. May this remembrance bring
comfort to their families and friends, knowing their legacy continues to hold profound meaning and will forever be honored by both the department and the community they served.

Citizens traveling through central Wisconsin are encouraged to visit the Wisconsin State Firefighters’ Memorial, located at Ben Hansen Park, 2031 2nd Avenue South, in Wisconsin Rapids.

Due to ongoing flooding, severe storms forecasted for tonight, and the potential for an additional three inches of rainfall later this week, residents are strongly urged to follow expert safety guidance: “TURN AROUND – DON’T DROWN!”

Exercise increased caution after dark, as standing or moving water on roadways can be extremely difficult to detect and may appear suddenly. Never attempt to drive through flooded roads. Doing so places you, your passengers, and emergency responders at significant risk of injury or death.

Residents are encouraged to share this critical safety message with others, particularly young and inexperienced drivers, to help prevent avoidable tragedies.

Inside the origins of “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”
