Defeating a Super Majority
Three Democrats who were supported by Work for Democracy helped prevent Republicans from attaining a super-majority in the N.C. House despite a GOP prediction of dominance.
Republicans won a super-majority in the N.C. Senate, but were blocked in the N.C. House.
Sandy Vreeland, founder of WFD said “Despite the historical disadvantage of the mid-term elections, and despite the shameless and unscrupulous dark money attacks on Democrats, Work for Democracy candidates came within a handful of votes of having a net winning day; and on a statewide basis Democrats had a good enough showing to maintain Gov. Cooper’s ability to successfully veto detrimental Republican legislation.”
Democratic House winners supported by WFD are Ashton Clemmons of Guilford County, Terence Everitt of Wake County and Ray Jeffers of Person County. Three of five N.C. Senate candidates supported by WFD won their races. The winners are Michael Garrett of Guilford, Sydney Batch of Wake and Mary Wills Bode, Wake and Granville counties.
Other races did not go well for WFD candidates. Brandon Gray of Guilford County lost as did incumbent Linda Cooper-Suggs of Wilson County and James Gailliard of Nash County. Two other races were very close but not close enough. Incumbents Ricky Hurtado of Alamance County lost by 658 votes and Brian Farkas of Pitt County lost by 354 votes. Two other WFD supported Senate candidates, Marcia Morgan of New Hanover and Mark Speed of Franklin, were defeated.
Sandy is optimistic about the next election: “In 2024, I predict a blue wave.”
Fund-raising a great success
“Work for Democracy has become a powerhouse in North Carolina politics,” said WFD Executive Committee member Sarah Squires. “Each cycle, we have shown significant growth in our fund-raising and in the number of races influenced.”
The recent election was the most successful yet, resulting in $119,422 raised. Thanks to the frugal mindset of our Executive Committee, the vast majority of these funds went directly to campaigns after we subtracted minor expenses. “It is such a joy to volunteer for an organization that is fueled by members that are consistently generous and enthusiastic,” said Sarah. “Thank you so much for making this our most influential year to date.”
