American workers are the backbone of this nation’s strength, prosperity, and well-being, often while facing stagnant wages, shrinking benefits, and vanishing work-life balance.
However, President Trump dismissed this reality, complaining that America has “too many non-working holidays” and framing business closures as a cost measured only in billions of dollars, not in the lives and families those days off protect. For a man who has never known a hard day’s labor, workers’ rest looks like an inefficiency to be eliminated.
Labor Day was not handed down from Washington. It exists because generations of labor activists fought, organized, and sacrificed to win recognition for American workers’ social and economic contributions, often against the fierce opposition of men very much like him.
Today, we honor the people whose labor keeps this country moving, and the workers who came before them and refused to accept indignity and unfairness as the cost of doing business.
