The Cherokee National Enduro will be held this weekend in Greene County. If you plan on travelling on Hwy 15 North (Athens Hwy) near the area of Cold Springs Rd this weekend, please use caution in this area and be alert for heavy motorcycle and racer support traffic. There will be Deputies out assisting with this event.

The Greene County Sheriff's Office has found an abandoned boat. If you are the owner or know who the owner may be, please contact the Sheriff's Office and speak with Investigator SGT Don Smith.

We have received numerous call recently concerning scams. Recently there has been an increase in scam calls and texts messages. The calls have been primarily concerning jury duty. The caller is identifying themselves as active members of the Greene County Sheriff's Office, from deputies, investigators and including the Sheriff. The caller is telling individuals that they have missed jury duty and if they do not pay a fine by obtaining a Green Dot card, then warrants will be issued for their arrest. Please do not entertain these calls. The Greene County Sheriff's Office does not and never will contact you by phone and request you pay a fine by any means for things of this nature. Do not give them any personal or financial information. These callers tend to prey on your good nature and fear of being arrested. Just hang up and block the number from which they called from.

The other scam is the one that is being texted to individuals from the Department of Driver Services about an unpaid balance on an account for unpaid toll fees. This message often contains a link to access a payment portal and threatens that if payment is not received then your driving privileges will be suspended. Do not click on the link because it most likely contains a virus or a way for individuals to access your phone to gain personal and financial information.

Sheriff Harrison wants everyone to stay vigilant and be prepared if contacted by one of these recent scam attempts. Never give out personal of financial information during any type of questionable encounter such as these.

The family of Jack Gersten, the young man who was tragically killed in a motor vehicle accident last week, reached out to us and asked if we could post this letter for them to show their gratitude to everyone who assisted in the search for their beloved Mel.

***UPDATE*** Mel has been located! She was found earlier and is being reunited with her family! Thank you to everyone who has shared this post, contacted Sheriff Harrison and our agency in order to assist us with locating Mel.

The Greene County Sheriff's Office is seeking help from our great citizens and those that may be following us and passing through Greene County on I-20. We are asking anyone who lives or may be traveling in the Siloam, Bethany Church, Chico Road area to be on the lookout for Mel. Her owners were in a fatal car accident earlier today on I-20 at the Greene/Taliaferro Line. Any assistance in locating Mel is greatly appreciated as we would love to reunite her with her family during this tragic time. If anyone has seen or may know Mel's whereabouts, please call 911.

***UPDATE*** The owner has been located and the device has been returned! Thank you all for your assistance!

The Greene County Sheriff's Office has located an i-Pad on Cedar Grove Road. This i-Pad looks to be set up for a small child. If you are missing an i-Pad, can identify and unlock the device, please contact the Sheriff's Office, (706)453-3351, and speak with SGT Antavious Hall in order to claim the device.

Sheriff Harrison would like to make everyone aware of a new scam that has surfaced. If you get a phone call from someone identifying themselves as an employee with the Greene County Sheriff's Office regarding missed jury duty, DO NOT GIVE OUT ANY PERSONAL OR FINANCIAL INFORMATION because this is a scam. The Greene County Sheriff's Office will not contact you by phone or ask you for payment for missed jury duty or any other court related matter. The number the calls are coming from appear to be local or at least from one of the surrounding counties.

Again, please do not give out any of your personal or financial information to these individuals. They will identify themselves as a Sergeant, Deputy, or possibly another ranking official with the Greene County Sheriff's Office and tell you that you missed jury duty or possibly have an outstanding warrant because of missing some court related event. Please stay vigilant due to the increased number of scam calls during this time of year.

Willow Run Rd is reopened at this time. Fire units remain on scene at Novelis continuing fire operations. Use caution while traveling in this area and be alert for emergency personnel still assisting with this incident.

UPDATE:The fire incident on Willow Run Rd. is still active. No immediate threats to surrounding structures or residences exist and no injuries have been reported at this time. Please avoid this area as this is an active incident.
