The Rutherfordton Police Department would like to address recent questions and concerns regarding Flock Safety Cameras.

These cameras are not used for speed enforcement. They are not used to issue citations for minor traffic violations or motor vehicle infractions. Their purpose is to assist law enforcement with public safety and criminal investigations.

Flock cameras are a valuable tool that can help officers identify vehicles associated with stolen vehicle cases, missing persons, Amber Alerts, Silver Alerts, homicides, shootings, robberies, wanted individuals, and other serious criminal investigations. In many cases, timely information can make the difference between a case going unsolved and a victim or family receiving answers.

We ask our community to consider this: if your child, parent, spouse, or loved one was missing or in danger, would you want law enforcement to have every lawful tool available to help bring them home safely?

Each damaged camera costs approximately $3,500 to replace. When public safety equipment is damaged, that cost does not just affect the police department; it affects the community. It also impacts the availability of tools that may be needed to help someone’s family member, recover stolen property, locate a missing person, or solve a serious crime.

If these cameras continue to be damaged, additional cameras or surveillance equipment may have to be purchased and installed for the purpose of identifying those responsible and assisting with criminal charges. That creates even more unnecessary cost to the community.

Any person who damages, disables, tampers with, or destroys public safety equipment is committing a crime. The Rutherfordton Police Department will investigate these incidents thoroughly, and anyone responsible will be arrested when appropriate and charged to the fullest extent allowed under North Carolina law.

We ask anyone considering damaging this equipment to understand that doing so does not make a statement or help anyone. It only hurts the community, limits tools available to law enforcement, and may delay help for someone who truly needs it.

These cameras exist to help protect our community, assist victims, support families, and hold offenders accountable. We ask the community to assist if they have any information and contact 911 if you witness anyone committing this offense.

Today marks one year since we lost our brother, Officer Jonathan "JT" Thomas.

There are some who leave a lasting impact in a short amount of time, and JT was one of them. His dedication to serving others, his unwavering commitment to this community, and the friendships he built within our department will never be forgotten.

While a year has passed, his memory remains a part of who we are. We continue to honor his service, his sacrifice, and the legacy he left behind.

Please join the Greensboro Police Department as we remember Officer Jonathan "JT" Thomas, keep his family and loved ones in your thoughts, and honor the life of a man who proudly wore the badge and faithfully served the citizens of Greensboro.

🚔 TRAFFICKING ARREST MADE IN GREENSBORO – PROACTIVE POLICING MAKES THE DIFFERENCE 🚔
Sometimes the smallest traffic violation leads to the biggest arrest.
On July 1, 2026, Officer C. Cosby, affectionately known around the department as "Twin," observed a vehicle fail to stop at a stop sign and nearly collide with her patrol vehicle. During the traffic stop, Officer Cosby noticed several inconsistencies that immediately raised her suspicion. Trusting her instincts, she requested assistance from Officer Evans, Officer Ballard, and Lt. Janes.
Their teamwork and attention to detail led to the discovery of a trafficking quantity of suspected methamphetamine hidden beneath the driver's seat. During the investigation, additional suspected methamphetamine and drug-related paraphernalia were also recovered.
As a result:
🔹 Nicholas Menard, 36, of Chickamauga GA, was charged with:
• Trafficking Methamphetamine
• Possession of Drug-Related Objects
• Failure to Stop at a Stop Sign
🔹 Justin Thompson, 36, of Gaylesville AL, was charged with:
• Trafficking Methamphetamine
• Possession of Methamphetamine
• Possession of Drug-Related Objects
• Tampering with Evidence
• Crossing the Guard Lines with Contraband
Both individuals were transported to the Greene County Jail.
👏 Outstanding work by Officer Cosby ("Twin")! Her keen observation skills, professionalism, and commitment to proactive policing—combined with the teamwork of Officer Evans, Officer Ballard, and Lt. Janes—helped remove a significant quantity of dangerous narcotics from our streets before they could reach our community.
Chief Monford's Message:
"To anyone traveling through Greensboro thinking you can use our city as a corridor to transport or distribute illegal drugs, let this serve as your warning: You picked the wrong town. Our officers are vigilant, proactive, and committed to protecting this community every single day. We don't care where you're coming from or where you're headed—if you bring illegal drugs into Greensboro, there's a good chance your trip will end in the Greene County Jail. Criminals are not welcome here."
This arrest is another example of how proactive policing, strong instincts, and teamwork continue to make Greensboro a safer place to live, work, and visit.
