Needlework samplers may seem small and quiet at first glance, but they hold an incredible amount of history.

Join us on Thursday, May 28 from 5:30–7:00 pm for Vermont Sampler Stories with Michele Pagán at the Greensboro Free Library.

Through the lens of 19th century Vermont schoolgirl samplers, Michele will explore early education, family life, Revolutionary War connections, and the values that shaped communities across the state. These stitched works offer a surprisingly personal window into Vermont history.

Michele Pagán is a textile conservator and researcher based in East Dorset, Vermont, and currently serves as Special Projects Coordinator for the Vermont Sampler Initiative.

This free program is sponsored by Vermont Humanities and is open to the public.

We’re excited to welcome Marger Cecilia Villamizar as our May exhibiting artist, on view at the library starting today through June 2.

Marger’s work is inspired by plants, natural materials, and the rhythms of the seasons, with a mix of botanical and Ikebana-inspired pieces throughout the space. At the center is The Tree of Collective Intentions (El Árbol de las Intenciones Colectivas), an interactive piece inviting visitors to pause and add their own reflections.

Marger will also be offering a workshop, Ikebana-Inspired Upcycled Floral Art, on May 21 at 5:00 pm. Space is limited. To register, please email [email protected]

There’s a certain quiet to being out on the trails this time of year. Birds returning, trees just starting to fill in, everything shifting back to life.

In collaboration with the Greensboro Conservation Commission, we’re hosting two spring bird walks. These are a nice way to spend a morning outside, whether you know your birds or are just curious to learn.

Open to all. Families are welcome. We just ask that participants are able to move at a relaxed pace and stay fairly quiet while observing.

May 17 – Bathtub Rock / Porter Brook
Meet at Highland Lodge at 7:00 am

May 24 – Bear Glen Trails
Meet at the end of Collier Rd at 7:00 am

Each walk is limited to 20 participants, so we ask that you register ahead of time. Sign up at the library, call 802-533-2531, or email [email protected]

We’ll be doing a bit of spring clean up at the library this Friday, May 1st starting at 12 noon.

A mix of outside gardening and general clean up inside and out. If you have some time to stop by, even for a little while, we’d be glad to have the help.

Feel free to bring gloves, a rake, or anything that might be useful. We’ll have a few snacks on hand as well.

Hope to see you there.

Thank You & Mushroom Resources

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the mushroom workshop with Annabelle. It was a great evening, and we appreciated all the curiosity and conversation in the room.

If you weren’t able to make it, or would like to revisit some of the material, here’s a recording of a similar talk:

Annabelle will also be leading mushroom walks in Danville on May 9 and May 30 through the Fairbanks Museum & Planetarium:

A great chance to keep learning and spend some time out in the field.

Thanks again to Annabelle for a thoughtful and engaging program.

CALL FOR LOCAL ARTISTS!

The Greensboro Free Library gallery is a small, welcoming space at the center of the library, and we’re looking for local artists to share their work.

We have openings in May, June, and September, with each exhibit on display for one month.

This is a good fit for first-time exhibitors as well as more established artists. We’re especially interested in supporting artists who are exploring, growing, or trying something new.

There’s also the option to pair your exhibit with a small workshop or artist talk, something simple and connected to your work.

If you’re interested, we’d love to hear from you.

April is for Poetry.

Our community gallery has been taken over by poems this month. Words on the walls, a community poem you can add a line to, and space to post something of your own. Stop in and see what people have been writing.

No poetry experience required.

We've also pulled together a poetry book collection worth browsing, from children's classics to contemporary favorites. Borrow something and let us know what you think.

You can also send something to [email protected].
