Winne the Pooh is 100 years and one day old today!

Silly old bear! "Winnie-the-Pooh" turns 100 today! 🎂

On October 14, 1926, A. A. Milne’s "Winnie-the-Pooh" was published as a collection of stories about the honey-loving bear and his friends in the Hundred Acre Wood.

Both author A. A. Milne and illustrator E. H. Shepard drew inspiration from their children. Milne’s son, Christopher Robin, and the stuffed animals in his nursery helped inspire the stories and characters. Shepard, meanwhile, modeled Pooh after his own son’s teddy bear, Growler.

Since 2004, The Carle has cared for over 100 original E. H. Shepard illustrations, on long-term loan from Penguin Young Readers Group.

The Greensboro Free Library seeks a volunteer Treasurer. The Treasurer fulfills a Board role, usually held by a Trustee elected at Town Meeting. The Treasurer is responsible for: financial reports to the Board, Finance committee, Town and tax preparer; budgeting; managing investments; and overseeing/performing all bookkeeping tasks such as payroll, bill paying, and revenue recognition. Must have some accounting skills, facility with QuickBooks, Excel, Word, and Google docs.

Time commitment is about 10hr/week first half of the month and 5hr/week the last half of the month.

Our current Treasurer/Trustee term will end at Town Meeting. Terms are limited to 2 three year terms. To provide for an orderly transition, our hope is to onboard the next Treasurer soon to allow for training. The Greensboro Free Library is a vibrant community hub providing a rewarding experience for its volunteers, patrons, and donors.

"Underneath the quirks, Miller kept finding libraries quietly doing the work of protecting the people who use them. In Greensboro, they traced a sign reading “The FBI has not been here” back to the Patriot Act, when a since-repealed provision let the government seize library reading records and barred librarians from telling patrons if their own records had been pulled. Librarians worked around the second restriction with the sign itself, built to come down the moment it stopped being true. To this day, it is still posted."

Congratulations to Hannah Miller for completing your tour of the 212 libraries in Vermont!

Dr. Hannah Miller has now been to all 212 libraries in Vermont. The nearly three-year quest ended this past Saturday, when Miller visited the Rutland Free Library with a final talk, donuts and a group photo with the people who came to see them finish.

🚨 Local author alert! 🚨

Save the date for Thursday, November 5th as Stephen Russell Payne will join us at 4 pm to read from, discuss, and sign copies of his latest release, Almost April. He will have copies for sale and a portion of proceeds will benefit the Greensboro Free Library.

Stephen grew up in St. Johnsbury and lives on a hill farm with his family. One of our trustees even attended high school with him!

His latest, Almost April, is a dramatic coming-of-age love story, wherein heartbreak and hope and woven finely together.

We hope to see you there in support of Stephen and our library!
