Great job GCS

| We are continuing to celebrate our accountability data results!🌟💙

Did you know that 69% of our schools met or exceeded growth, based on how much progress students are expected to make during the course of the year? One of those schools that exceeded growth was Ferndale Middle, which has exceeded growth three years in a row.🏆

Tiger Families,

We made it through our first full week, and I want to start with a huge THANK YOU to our families for successfully braving the car rider line!

For our new families, we know arrival and dismissal can feel like a lot at first. Once everyone learns the flow, though, it becomes extremely efficient. Thank you for your patience, flexibility, and partnership as we continue refining the process.

Car Rider Reminder

Morning Arrival: You may use either lane when entering campus. You can:

Make the immediate right after entering the parking lot, or
Continue to the second row, make a right, and enter Lane 2.
I will continue being positioned near the top of the hill to help move additional vehicles off Guilford College Road and into Lane 2. The more we use both lanes, the faster we can safely get everyone onto campus.

Afternoon Dismissal: Please continue entering the specific lane assigned for your student’s pickup area. If someone new will be picking up your student, please share our car rider process with them ahead of time so they know which lane to use.

Thank you, Tiger Nation. On to Week 2!

School Bus Safety: Help Us Start Week 2 Strong

Families, we also need your partnership in reinforcing safe and respectful behavior on our school buses. GCS Transportation has shared several expectations designed to ensure every student and driver has a safe and positive ride.

Please remind students to:

Sit in their assigned seat and remain seated during the ride.
Use respectful language and an appropriate voice level.
Follow all directions from the bus driver.
Keep hands, feet, belongings, and other items safely inside the bus.
Avoid fighting, bullying, harassment, horseplay, or inappropriate physical contact.
Bus safety is a shared responsibility. Behavior that distracts the driver or creates an unsafe environment may result in school-based consequences and/or suspension from bus transportation based on the nature and severity of the incident.

Meet Our School Resource Officer

We are excited to continue our partnership with Officer Azlan of the Greensboro Police Department, who serves Western Guilford Middle School full-time as our School Resource Officer.

Officer Azlan’s work extends well beyond responding to incidents. She supports school safety, builds relationships with students and families, collaborates with staff, and helps connect students with positive opportunities and community resources.

Families may also hear more this year about Confident Girls Rising, a mentoring program serving young ladies at WGMS, as well as Operation Yuletide, which connects eligible families with additional support during the holiday season. Officer Azlan also plans to share periodic safety information and community resources throughout the year.

We are thankful to have her as a visible and supportive member of Tiger Nation.

Family Voice Needed: Superintendent’s Family Advisory Council

Guilford County Schools is seeking two parents or family members from each school to participate in the Superintendent’s Family Advisory Council.

The council gives families an opportunity to share their experiences, perspectives, and ideas while helping shape family engagement efforts across GCS.

Meetings are scheduled for:

October 5, 2026 | 5:30–7:00 p.m.
January 26, 2027 | 5:30–7:00 p.m.
April 19, 2027 | 5:30–7:00 p.m.
Meetings will be held at the GCS Community Education Center, 2703 E. Florida Street, Greensboro. Our school must submit its two representatives by Thursday, September 10.

If you are interested in representing Western Guilford Middle School and Tiger Nation, please contact the school as soon as possible.

BETTER TOGETHER! Week 2!

08/25/2026

It is day two! How was day one? Did you and your student discuss it? Please remember all 181 days are very important to your students academic career but please be reminded the first 10 days are even more important!.

Please be reminded that if your student is absent from school, a note must accompany your student upon their return. That note must be on a full sheet of paper if coming from a parent and or a guardian. If there is another reason again, proper documentation must be returned when the student arrives back at school and that note must go to the data manager.

If your student is a car rider, please make sure you refer to principal Arrington‘s message on Sunday evening and the message that was posted on Monday morning.

Make sure you have downloaded and set up the HCTB App to assist you and your student with their bus.

Greetings Tiger Nation!
This is Principal Chase Arrington with your Western Guilford Middle School announcements for the week of Monday, August 24 through Friday, August 28, 2026.
TODAY is the BIG DAY!
We are incredibly excited to welcome our new AND returning Tigers for the first day of the 2026–2027 school year!
The first day always brings excitement, energy, and a few nerves, and our team is ready to welcome, support, and help every student get where they need to be.
Thank you to all of our families who joined us for Open House last week. We also appreciate your continued patience as we finalize schedules and prepare for a strong start to the year.
Arrival & Dismissal
To help everyone prepare, we created videos showing our arrival and dismissal procedures. Please take a few minutes to review the video for your student’s grade level.
6th Grade Arrival & Dismissal:

Watch the Full Arrival & Dismissal Overview
Morning Drop-Off: Families may use either car-rider line in the morning, regardless of grade level. Drop-off begins at 7:50 AM. Please keep students in the vehicle until a staff member signals that they may enter. Students are considered tardy after 8:20 AM.
Afternoon Pick-Up: Dismissal begins at 3:20 PM, and all car riders should be picked up by 3:50 PM. Afternoon lines ARE organized by grade level. If you are picking up students in multiple grades, please use the line for your studnet in the highest grade level. For example, if you are picking up a 6th grader and an 8th grader, use the 8th grade line.
Please be patient with us during the first several days as everyone learns the process. Several WGMS staff members will be stationed throughout the parking lot during both arrival and dismissal to help guide families. Safety comes first, and efficiency will improve as we establish our routine together.
Student Entry on the First Day
To help us maintain a safe, organized, and smooth opening, parents and guardians will not be permitted to walk students to classrooms or enter the instructional hallways tomorrow morning.
Our staff will be positioned throughout the building to welcome students, help them locate classrooms, answer questions, and make sure every Tiger gets where they need to go.
Families who need assistance with enrollment paperwork or need to speak with our Data Manager regarding enrollment may enter through the designated visitor entrance.
We know that starting middle school, or simply beginning a new school year, can be a big transition. Please know that your children will have adults ready to support them from the moment they arrive.
Breakfast & Lunch
All WGMS students receive FREE breakfast and lunch every school day.
6th and 7th grade students will report to the cafeteria for breakfast. 8th grade students will receive breakfast in the 8th grade hallway near Ms. Richardson’s office.
All students and visitors will pass through our security scanners when entering the building. Staff members will be available to teach and support students with these procedures.
This Week at WGMS

Welcome Back, Tiger Nation!
Families, thank you for trusting us with your children. Tomorrow begins another opportunity for our Tigers to learn, grow, lead, build relationships, and discover what they are capable of achieving.
There may be a few bumps as everyone settles into new schedules, transportation routes, arrival procedures, lockers, classrooms, and routines, and that is okay. We will work through them together.
Students, get some rest tonight and come ready to Be Proactive, Begin with the End in Mind, and give us nothing but YOUR very best!
We are ready for you.
Welcome home, Tigers. Let’s make 2026–2027 an AMAZING year!
With Tiger Pride,

Chase Arrington
