For the second year in a row, the Greensburg Police Department was presented with the Kansas Department of Transportation Bronze Community Traffic Safety Award. The award recognizes the Police Department's participation in traffic safety campaigns throughout the year. Officer Matt Woods is the main contributor for the campaigns for the Police Department. ****UPDATE****

After further discussion with City Administrator Stacy Barnes, she has decided to administratively allow the firing and discharge of fireworks on city streets from June 29th through July 5th. Although still against city ordinance, Stacy has requested the Police Department not enforce that part of the ordinance and that the ordinance will be addressed at a future city council meeting. Stacy requested that all debris be removed from street after use. She requested that people firing and discharging fireworks in the street be aware of pedestrians and vehicles in the area.

The City of Greensburg allows for the firing and discharge of fireworks within city limits from June 29th through July 5th from 10am to Midnight. It is unlawful to discharge, ignite or fire fireworks in the street, alleys, parks or public places unless approved. It is unlawful to throw, cast or propel fireworks in the direction or in the path of people, animals or vehicles. When discharging fireworks, have access to water or a fire extinguisher close by in case of an emergency. Anyone violating City ordinance concerning fireworks will be issued a citation and risk having remaining fireworks seized. Be safe and enjoy the holiday.

On May 4th, 2026, the Greensburg Police Department and Kiowa County Sheriff's Office had the honor of escorting the 30th Anniversary Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America through Greensburg. The charity ride, a nine day, 3400 mile journey, started in Sonoma, California and ended at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina. The charity ride raised over 2.7 million dollars for Victory Junction, a totally free camp in North Carolina for children with serious medical conditions from all 50 states. Over 100 motorcycles and support vehicles went through town without a hitch. Today, I received some challenge coins memorializing the ride from Morgan Petty, Kyle Petty's wife. Thanks for the challenge coins and what you do for the kids.

The Greensburg Police Department will participate with other law enforcement agencies across the State of Kansas in the Click It or Ticket campaign from May 17th through June 1st. Fastening your seatbelt is an easy way to get to your destination safely. If you are seen not wearing your seatbelt, you will be stopped and you will be issued a citation.

April 17th through April 21st, the Greensburg Police Department, along with other Law Enforcement agencies across the state, will be participating in the 4/20 campaign. Officers will be looking for impaired drivers who are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. If you are impaired, please have a designated driver so everyone can make it to their destinations safely.

Be aware of scams that are sent to you by email or text message. This scam was sent to a Greensburg resident. Fortunately, the resident was alert and knew she had not been in Kansas City so she did not scan the QR code. If you have a question about something you receive, contact the Police Department or Kiowa County Sheriff's Office and we can help. Sorry Mr. or Mrs. Scammer, the people of Grrensburg and Kiowa County are smarter than you!
