🚨Attention Greentown Residents and SnowMageddon Survivors 🚨

As you’re out shoveling driveways and sidewalks, we ask all residents to please take a moment to clear the snow away from any fire hydrants on or near your property. In an emergency, every second counts—and a buried hydrant can slow down fire crews when time matters most.

🚒 Quick reminder:
• Clear at least 3 feet around the hydrant
• Make sure it’s visible from the street
• Don’t pile snow on top or directly in front of it

Thank you for helping us help you. Stay safe, stay warm, and take your time out there!

The county-wide burn ban for Howard County has been lifted. Open burning of brush/yard debris may resume, as long as you follow local fire safety rules.

Please burn responsibly:
– Keep fires attended and controlled
– Avoid burning on windy/dry days
– Be considerate of smoke and neighbors
– Rules may change again if conditions worsen

Thank you for your cooperation while the ban was in effect

PUBLIC NOTICE — COUNTY BURN BAN EXTENDED

After reviewing the current conditions and projected outlook, the Howard County Fire Chiefs have determined that it is necessary to extend the county-wide burn ban through Monday, October 27th.

The burn ban is in effect under the authority of Indiana Fire Code § 307.1.1, which authorizes the Fire Chief or Chiefs to order the immediate discontinuation of open burning when it creates a hazardous condition. This section grants local fire officials the authority to issue burn bans during periods of heightened risk—such as dry weather or high winds—even when certain types of burning would otherwise be permitted. Violations of this order may result in penalties and fines.

We appreciate the public’s continued cooperation in reducing the risk of uncontrolled fires during this period.

Respectfully,
Landen Bartley
Fire Chief, Russiaville Fire Department
President, Howard County Fire Chiefs Association

🔥 Illegal Burn Causes Large Field Fire During Burn Ban 🔥

At approximately 2:01 PM, the Greentown Vol. Fire Company was dispatched to a large field fire caused by an illegal burn pit during the current burn ban. The fire spread rapidly due to dry conditions and high winds, burning approximately 25 acres of field and about 30 feet of standing corn before being brought under control.

By approximately 2:45 PM, the fire was contained, and all units were back in service at 4:01 PM after extensive overhaul and cleanup operations. Crews used roughly 6,200 gallons of water to extinguish hot spots and prevent any further spread.

🙏 A special thank you goes out to Winger Farms, Spangler Farms, and Gingerich Farms for responding with tractors and discs to assist. Your quick action and teamwork were critical in containing the fire and protecting nearby properties.

🚒 Thank you to the following departments for their assistance:
Taylor Township Fire Rescue
Galveston Volunteer Fire Department
Swayzee Volunteer Fire Department
Converse Volunteer Fire Company
Sharpsville Fire Department
Wildcat Township Fire-Rescue-EMS
Howard County Office of Emergency Management
Howard County 911 Dispatch
Greentown Police Department- G7

This incident serves as a strong reminder: burn bans are in place for a reason. Please follow all local restrictions to help keep our community, property, and first responders safe.

🚨Attention 🚨
The Howard County Fire Chief’s have convened and decided a county wide burn ban should be instituted and made effective immediately, Sunday October 12th. This decision is based upon the dry conditions, lack of rain predicted in the 7 day forecast, and recent call volume due to field fires. This is a collaborated decision among the fire chiefs as a proactive approach to reduce field fires, brush fires, and the loss of property.
>>> The burn ban will remain in effect until the Howard County Fire Chief’s reconvene on Monday October 20th to review the current conditions.
>>> Thank You,
>>> Landen Bartley -
>>> Russiaville Fire Chief,
>>> President Howard County Fire Chiefs Association
