Given the rich cultural treasures shared last night, it's completely understandable that some references might have been unfamiliar to you, and that's perfectly okay. If you didn't have the privilege of growing up on, or spending meaningful time on that island, you wouldn't necessarily grasp the profound significance of the jibaro singing “le-lo-lai”, or the casita surrounded by fields of sugarcane, or the Parrandas, or the dominoes, or the coqui, or Sazón, or the Salsa that permeates every corner of our culture - via every sense available to you…there truly was very little expectation that America would “get it”, I mean, its only been almost 128 years since the US INVADED and took over, installing their government and culture throughout the island, and yet, plenty of people out there still believing Puerto Ricans aren’t citizens. (It’s been that way since before ANY OF US WERE BORN)
Anyway, the fact that most Americans are oblivious to our history and culture is sad, but not surprising. What is even sadder is that Bad Bunny’s high road performance last night was a masterpiece of cultural expression, joy, and pride…and many AMERICANS not only chose to ignore it, but made a point of celebrating their ignorance in advance.
Sad state of affairs we exist in.
Thank you Bad Bunny. You could have done what they expected, blasted the cowardice and injustice that’s infected our government, but you chose to show the beauty of our culture instead, and deliver a message of love over hate, that unfortunately most of the haters missed. Too bad for them.
