Pedestrian safety is a top priority at ECU. ⚠️

A new High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) signal is now active on East Tenth Street near East Carolina University's Umstead Residence Hall.

This pedestrian-activated signal improves visibility and provides a safer crossing point in an area with frequent foot and vehicle traffic.

As campus activity increases ahead of FDOC, drivers and pedestrians are encouraged to remain attentive and aware of this new traffic signal.

Traffic pattern changes ahead. ⚠️

The N.C. Department of Transportation will install a High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk (HAWK) signal on East Tenth Street near Anderson Street, in front of East Carolina University’s Umstead residence hall. The signal will help pedestrians cross Tenth Street safely with minimal disruption to drivers. The HAWK signal is expected to be active by Friday, Dec. 19.

Motorists should use caution when approaching the new signal and follow these instructions:

-Flashing yellow: Slow down. A pedestrian has activated the push button.
-Solid yellow: Prepare to stop if it is safe to do so.
-Solid red: Drivers must stop while a pedestrian is in the crosswalk.
-Flashing red: Treat as a stop sign. Proceed only after the pedestrian has finished crossing.
