2025 Healthy Greenville Grant

The Greenville Health Authority (GHA) awarded Meals on Wheels of Greenville (MOW) a $500,000 Healthy Greenville Grant to support the construction of a new facility and expand services to meet the growing needs of homebound individuals and seniors in Greenville County. The new facility officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 5.

The grant has strengthened MOW’s ability to address food insecurity and limited access to nutritious food among Greenville County’s homebound population. As a nutrition provider serving some of the community’s most vulnerable residents, MOW helps ensure that individuals who are unable to meet this most basic need—food—have access to nutritious meals, meaningful personal interaction, and the support they need to remain independent.

Through its mission to enhance the quality of life of homebound individuals and seniors, Meals on Wheels of Greenville provides nutritious meals and personal connection while promoting health, dignity, and independence. MOW services are available without income restrictions, recognizing that food insecurity and the need for support can affect individuals facing a variety of circumstances, including aging, disability, injury, or other challenges beyond their control. For some clients, services are needed only temporarily; for others, ongoing support is essential.

The need for these services is significant. Food-insecure seniors are 60% more likely to experience congestive heart failure or a heart attack and are three times more likely to experience depression. By providing consistent access to nutritious meals and personal interaction, Meals on Wheels programs can help seniors remain healthy and independent in their own homes—the place where most want to remain.

Beyond improving quality of life, Meals on Wheels also provides a meaningful economic benefit. By helping older adults maintain their health and independence at home, these programs can reduce reliance on more costly healthcare and institutional alternatives, generating significant savings to taxpayers nationally.
The support from the Healthy Greenville Grant represents an important investment in the health, independence, and well-being of Greenville County’s homebound residents and enables Meals on Wheels of Greenville to serve more individuals who depend on these vital services.

2025 Healthy Greenville Grant

The Greenville Health Authority (GHA) awarded Safe Harbor a $400,000 Healthy Greenville Grant to expand access to services for survivors of domestic abuse.

The grant will support the opening of Safe Harbor's new Greenville Shelter and Support Center at 100 Gordon St., Greenville, on the site of a former mill in the Brandon neighborhood. Serving all of Greenville County, the new facility will increase emergency shelter capacity by more than 200% while bringing critical services together under one roof.

The Center features a 24-hour emergency shelter with 21 private family units and shared community spaces, as well as a comprehensive Supportive Services Center offering a 24/7 helpline, counseling for adults and children, case management, legal assistance, support groups, education, and housing support. By consolidating services currently spread across three locations, the new campus will improve access to coordinated, trauma-informed care.

The need for these expanded services is significant. Domestic abuse places a substantial burden on the healthcare system. A Kimble Foundation study estimated that domestic violence costs Greenville County more than $10.7 million annually in physical and mental healthcare, while victims face higher healthcare costs, lost workdays, and lasting physical and emotional impacts.

2025 Healthy Greenville Grant Award

The Greenville Health Authority (GHA) awarded The Blood Connection a $500,000 Healthy Greenville Grant to purchase a new Bloodmobile for Greenville County.

Since 1962, The Blood Connection (TBC), a nonprofit 501(c)(3) community blood center, has been committed to ensuring healthcare partners have access to a safe, adequate, and cost-effective blood supply through voluntary blood donation. As the sole provider of blood products to hospitals throughout Upstate South Carolina, including those in Greenville County, TBC plays a vital role in supporting lifesaving patient care every day.
A single blood donation can be separated into multiple transfusable components—including red blood cells, platelets, plasma, and cryoprecipitate (a blood clotting factor)—allowing one donation to potentially help two or three patients. At the same time, a single patient experiencing severe trauma, undergoing cancer treatment, or facing a complex surgical procedure may require anywhere from five to more than 100 units of blood. When daily collection goals are not met, hospitals face the risk of delayed or limited access to these critical blood products.

Every two seconds, someone in Greenville County requires a blood transfusion, and approximately 70% of the community's blood supply is collected through mobile blood drives.

Bloodmobiles are the cornerstone of Greenville County's blood collection efforts, bringing convenient donation opportunities directly to neighborhoods, schools, businesses, faith communities, and other gathering places. However, the current fleet serving the region has exceeded its optimal service life, resulting in increased maintenance costs, reduced reliability, and the potential for disruptions to scheduled blood drives. Replacing these aging bloodmobiles is essential to maintaining a stable blood supply, ensuring uninterrupted collection efforts, and providing hospitals throughout Greenville County with the lifesaving blood products their patients depend on.

Miracle Hill Ministries is South Carolina’s largest and most comprehensive provider of homeless services, serving individuals throughout Greenville County. Miracle Hill helps individuals move toward healthier, more stable lives by offering both immediate and long-term support, including emergency shelter, housing assistance, and supportive services.

Through this grant, Miracle Hill Ministries will expand access to in-shelter individual and group mental health therapy for men experiencing homelessness. By combining evidence-based mental health care with the stability of safe shelter, the program will provide trauma-informed care that promotes healing, resilience, and long-term recovery.

2025 Healthy Greenville Grant Award

The Greenville Health Authority (GHA) awarded Mill Village Ministries a $490,000 Healthy Greenville Grant to expand the FoodShare Greenville program and eliminate transportation barriers that prevent families from accessing healthy food throughout Greenville County.

Food insecurity among Greenville's children is more than a nutrition challenge—it is a public health, educational, and economic issue with lasting consequences. More than 60,000 Greenville County residents, including approximately 15% of children, experience food insecurity and face ongoing barriers to accessing nutritious food.

Mill Village Farms' FoodShare Greenville (FSG) program addresses these challenges by providing fresh, affordable produce directly to children and families through home delivery, school-based distribution, and healthcare partnerships. By reducing both transportation and cost barriers, the program also delivers bilingual, culturally relevant nutrition education that empowers families to make healthy choices and build long-term food security.

Through this grant, FoodShare Greenville will expand its fresh produce box program by implementing a volunteer-powered home delivery model connected to a school referral system. This innovative approach will ensure that families facing transportation and access challenges receive consistent deliveries of fresh produce and nutrition education, improving health outcomes and advancing equitable access to healthy food for undeserved residents across Greenville County.

2025 Healthy Greenville Grant Award

The Greenville Health Authority (GHA) awarded Lead Collective a $100,000 Healthy Greenville Grant to expand critical mental health services aimed at reducing juvenile crime in Greenville County.

Led by Cameron Hill, the Expanding Critical Mental Health Services to Reduce Juvenile Crime initiative will serve 60 at-risk youth annually who have involvement with the juvenile justice system. The program focuses primarily on African American males from low-income backgrounds and provides free, year-long counseling, trauma-informed care, and individualized support services designed to address the root causes of behavioral and mental health challenges.

Through partnerships with the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice, the Greenville County Solicitor’s Office, and local counseling providers, the initiative seeks to reduce probation violations, lower recidivism rates, increase high school graduation rates, and create safer communities by decreasing juvenile crime.

Lead Collective’s mission is centered on transformation, expanding hope, and cultivating opportunities for young people and families to flourish. This investment represents more than funding—it is a commitment to the future of Greenville’s youth. Each year, we celebrate the progress made through collective action and shared responsibility. By investing in our young people today, we are planting seeds of lasting impact that will strengthen our community for generations to come.
