“The Other Story – Remembrance Continues” Roundtable Honors
Legacy of the Emanuel 9 and Features Survivor Ms. Polly Sheppard
North Charleston, SC
On Friday, June 20, 2025, leaders, lawmakers, and community members will gather at The Opportunity Center, 8570 Rivers Avenue, North Charleston, for a powerful roundtable event titled “The Other Story – Remembrance Continues.” This gathering commemorates the tragic anniversary of the Emanuel 9 mass shooting, which occurred on June 17, 2015, at Mother Emanuel AME Church.
The roundtable is sponsored by the National Racial Justice Network, Elder James Johnson CEO, and South Carolina State Representative The Honorable Wendell Gilliard, and will center the voice of Ms. Polly Sheppard one of the few survivors of that horrific night. Dylann Roof, the white supremacist who carried out the massacre, deliberately spared Ms. Sheppard’s life telling her to "go and tell the story." This event is a continuation of that sacred mandate.
Ms. Sheppard and others will share their experience, not only as witnesses to unimaginable violence, but as voices of perseverance, faith, and justice. Local and state elected officials including legislators and mayors will be in attendance, reaffirming their commitment to equity, healing, and racial justice. The public and members of the press are encouraged to attend. Her story must be heard.
