SHE WAS PREGNANT WITH TWIN BOYS — POLICE SAY HE SHOT HER IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD AFTER BREAKFAST

THE MURDER OF DARIONNE BURLEY
Mansfield, Texas | June 29, 2020

A breakfast date ended in the murder of a young mother and her unborn sons.

On June 29, 2020, 26-year-old Darionne Burley and her boyfriend, Maurice Kelso Smith, ate breakfast together at a Waffle House.

According to prosecutors, an argument followed as they drove away.

While Darionne sat inside the vehicle, Smith allegedly pulled out a handgun and shot her once in the back of the head.

She died at the scene.

Darionne was 24 weeks pregnant with twin boys.

The unborn babies—identified during court proceedings as Twin A and Twin B—also died.

Investigators say Smith left Darionne's body inside the vehicle before walking across a nearby frontage road parking lot.

There, authorities say he pointed a gun at another woman, forced her from her SUV, and fled in the stolen vehicle.

Police tracked the SUV to Smith's apartment in Fort Worth later that same day.

According to investigators, officers found him covered in blood while attempting to clean the stolen vehicle and destroy evidence.

Detectives also recovered the murder weapon from his apartment.

The investigation revealed another disturbing detail.

Because Smith was a convicted felon prohibited from possessing fi****ms, prosecutors said he arranged for a friend to purchase the handgun for him at a gun show just one day before the murder.

After his arrest, Smith was taken to a hospital after what appeared to be a drug overdose.

However, investigators and medical personnel later concluded that he had fabricated both the overdose and his claims of memory loss.

On March 4, 2024, after approximately three and a half hours of deliberation, a Tarrant County jury found Smith guilty of capital murder.

Texas prosecutors pursued the case as capital murder because Darionne and her unborn twin sons were killed during the same criminal act.

Although prosecutors sought a capital murder conviction, the State of Texas waived the death penalty.

As a result, Smith received the automatic sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Court records indicate he has since appealed his conviction.

In a matter of seconds...

A young woman lost her life.

Two unborn little boys never had the chance to take their first breath.

Three lives were stolen in a single act of violence.

We want our community to know that right now, we are currently out of available housing funds. SWAT depends on the generosity of community partners, donors, and supporters who believe in helping survivors find safety, stability, and hope.

Every contribution, partnership, and resource connection helps us continue this mission.
Please understand that SWAT has established policies and procedures to ensure resources are distributed fairly and responsibly.

To receive housing assistance, individuals must:

✅ Provide required documentation and proof of need
✅ Meet eligibility requirements
✅ Reside within the counties SWAT currently serves
✅ Complete the review process before assistance can be approved
