As National Affordable Housing Month comes to a close — we honor the work of our emergency assistance program. This month we take time to recognize the importance of stable housing and the challenges many families across Greenville continue to face in accessing it.

Housing is considered affordable when it costs no more than 30% of a household’s income. For many in our community, that is becoming increasingly difficult to achieve.

Across Greenville and the Upstate, rising housing costs continue to place pressure on individuals and families working hard to maintain stability. For seniors living on fixed incomes, these challenges can be especially significant.

At United Ministries, our Emergency Assistance team walks alongside neighbors throughout Greenville County, helping provide support that strengthens housing stability during difficult seasons.

Affordable housing is more than a statistic — it is a pathway to stability, dignity, and opportunity. We believe everyone deserves access to safe and affordable housing.

We want to take a moment to highlight the generous $25,000 grant from our fantastic partners at the Junior League of Greenville in support of Eviction Prevention and Economic Mobility work at United Ministries.

This investment helps ensure that families facing housing instability have the resources and pathways they need to move forward with stability and dignity.

This support and partnership expands access to critical services and opportunities that help individuals and families build stronger foundations for the future. We are deeply grateful for the Junior League of Greenville’s shared commitment to strengthening our community through compassionate, intentional, and practical care.

Thank you, , for investing in our mission and for being a part of our vision for a Greenville Community working together so that everyone can thrive!

In the summer of 2025, eight participants from United Ministries’ Place of Hope Day Shelter were given cameras, photography training, and a simple but profound invitation: tell us your story. Over three days, participants documented aspects of their daily lives through photographs and personal narratives, capturing experiences of homelessness in Greenville with honesty, complexity, resilience, and humanity that statistics alone never could.

What does community look like when you have no place to call home?

What strengths do you carry?

What do you wish your neighbors understood?

These are the questions at the heart of the In Plain Sight PhotoVoice Project — a collaborative research and art initiative born from a partnership between United Ministries and Furman University

Through photography, storytelling, and lived experience, In Plain Sight brings visibility to realities that often go unseen and invites our community to listen more deeply, reflect more thoughtfully, and see our neighbors through a different lens.

Thank you to South Carolina Business Review for featuring this important work and helping amplify the voices and stories behind the project.

Last night, community leaders, partners, friends, and colleagues gathered at the Poinsett Club to celebrate Rev. Dr. Baxter Wynn as he received The Order of the Palmetto — South Carolina’s highest civilian honor. Presented by Representative Chandra Dillard on behalf of Governor Henry McMaster, the award recognizes individuals whose lifelong leadership, service, and dedication have made a profound impact on the state and its people.

For more than four decades, Rev. Dr. Wynn has shaped the Upstate through compassionate ministry, civic leadership, advocacy, and mentorship. His work has consistently brought people together to strengthen community life and expand opportunity for others, with a focus on affordable housing, neighborhood revitalization, and collaborative leadership that helps build a more connected and compassionate Greenville.

More than his accomplishments, Rev. Dr. Wynn’s legacy is reflected in the relationships he has built, the people he has encouraged, and the example he continues to set through faithful, humble, and community-centered leadership.

His influence continues to be felt through his longstanding connection to both United Ministries and the Community Foundation of Greenville, where his presence and guidance have helped strengthen mission-driven work over time.

United Ministries and were honored to host this special evening celebrating a leader whose impact on the Upstate will continue for generations.

Congratulations, Rev. Dr. Wynn, on this well-deserved honor.

We are deeply moved by the response at this year’s Uniting for Change Luncheon. Once again, this community showed up with incredible generosity, passion, and commitment to change.

Our tenth annual luncheon brought together more than 800 guests who leaned in and helped elevate a vital conversation centered on relational poverty and the transformative power of connection.

Our keynote speaker, Kevin Adler, reminded us that poverty is not only about a lack of resources, but often a lack of meaningful relationships. Through a powerful story of a Place of Hope partipants’ family reunification and testimony of a Striving to Thrive participant’s three-year journey, this truth came to life—offering a close look at the kind of transformation happening right here in our community.

This year’s gathering moved beyond conversation. It challenged perspectives, deepened empathy, and called each of us to recognize our role in building a more connected community. The message was clear: connection is not a soft solution—it is a powerful force for stability, opportunity, and dignity.

Your gift helps build the relationships that make lasting change possible.

We are grateful for the leadership and collaboration that made this gathering possible, and for the many voices that helped shape this shared conversation.
Deep appreciation goes to every guest, volunteer, participant, sponsor, staff member, and community partner who made this year’s luncheon a meaningful success!

As our President, Lizzie Bebber, reminded us: compassion is not just a value we hold—it is a practice we live out in relationship with one another. So, let’s go out and be the connection someone needs today!

SNAP Emergency Response Volunteers & Donors take the spotlight today as we celebrate their extraordinary generosity and impact.

In November, more than 46,000 Greenville County residents faced losing SNAP benefits—leaving many families with impossible decisions. Instead, volunteers and donors like you stepped in.

Because of you, our client-choice food pantry remained a place of dignity and hope in a moment of real uncertainty.

You showed up in a big way—meeting practical needs and helping restore stability for our neighbors.
$119,763 was given for food by 112 individuals & groups.

This incredible outpouring of support became a powerful force for change, impacting hundreds of individuals and families.

This collective effort carried our neighbors through a critical moment—and continues to shape what care looks like at United Ministries. From all of us here and on behalf of the lives impacted, THANK YOU!

We’re thrilled to honor our incredible partners and friends at Advent United Methodist Church (UMC) (, Advent United Methodist Church) in today’s Volunteer Spotlight 💛

Advent UMC is helping make the journey from homelessness to stable housing possible for individuals and families in our community. Their commitment goes far beyond words—covering housing unit costs, providing essential household items, and the volunteer power to clean and prepare spaces so that new residents receive the gift of home.

This kind of work takes dedication, intentionality, and genuine care. And they bring all of that with consistency, humility, and heart—again and again.
We’re deeply grateful for the compassion turn into action and their steady support offered behind the scenes, supporting fresh starts and new hope for individuals and families across Greenville.

Today we celebrate a volunteer of over 30 years, Jennifer Keir. A faithful and beloved volunteer at United Ministries’ Place of Hope. Her warm smile, steady presence, and unwavering commitment have brought dignity and hope to thousands of individuals experiencing homelessness. Often the first to greet someone by name, Jennifer has been a consistent source of compassion and encouragement for both our guests and staff.

Her impact extends far beyond Place of Hope. Through Westminster Presbyterian Church, Jennifer has served four terms as Elder, led numerous committees, and was commissioned for the Stephen Ministry. She was also honored with the Presbyterian Women’s Honorary Life Membership Award for her outstanding service. Jennifer played a vital role in bringing Ten Thousand Villages to Greenville, helping to raise funds, serve on the board, and promote fair trade by volunteering in the store and at events across the state.

We are filled with gratitude for her incredible legacy. Jennifer’s life of service has touched countless lives and inspired us all.

Thank you Jennifer, for your heart, your time, and your years of faithful service and for turning compassion into action.

– With love and gratitude, The United Ministries Staff & Community
