Help us celebrate Nikki on her 18-year work anniversary! 🎉

Serving as a Public Health Nurse and Early Intervention Service Coordinator and Supervisor, her favorite part of working at the Darke County General Health District is collaborating with her dedicated co-workers. She loves being part of a team that is genuinely committed to assisting our community members and truly cares about the individuals we serve. ❤️

If there is one major thing Nikki has learned over the last 18 years, it’s that nothing is impossible. She has seen firsthand that with hard work, patience, encouragement, hope, and support, anything can be achieved.

What keeps her motivated every day? Without a doubt, the families and kids she works with. Nikki considers it a true privilege to help the families of Darke County and watch their children grow and learn. 🌱

Thank you, Nikki, for nearly two decades of dedication and heartfelt service to our community!

The Darke County General Health District has been awarded a $24,999 mosquito control grant through the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency to fund our mosquito trapping program this summer.🎉

🦟We trap, collect, and ship local mosquitoes to the Ohio Department of Health, where they are tested specifically for West Nile Virus and La Crosse. A total of 14 traps (toolbox gravid, standing gravid, and BG types) will be set up around Darke County this year. Traps are set out at the beginning of the week and collected the following day. The mosquitoes are frozen overnight, counted, labeled, and shipped off for testing.

🦟Beyond covering the mileage to manage these traps throughout the county, this grant allows us to purchase larvicide tablets for Darke County residents, mosquito adulticide spraying in local villages and mosquito repellent products that we plan to hand out to residents at the Darke County Fair!

Have questions? Please call us at 937-548-4196.

Stay safe and have a great summer! ☀️

Greenville, OH – On June 4, 2026, The Darke County General Health District received notice that a bat from Darke County tested positive for rabies. A bat found outside of a Greenville residence was sent to the Ohio Department of Health Laboratory for testing, which concluded the positive result. The last confirmed case of rabies in an animal in Darke County was May of 2016.

Rabies is a dangerous virus that attacks the brain and nerves. It can infect any mammal, including humans, dogs, and cats. It is most common in wild animals like bats, skunks, and raccoons. The rabies virus is found in an infected animal's spit. It spreads when an infected animal bites someone, or if its spit gets into a person's eyes, nose, mouth, or an open cut.

Rabies is deadly if it is not treated early. However, rabies is preventable if you get medical help right away. Post exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is needed for an individual who was exposed.

How to protect yourself and your family:
• Stay away from wild or stray animals.
• Never touch an animal that looks sick, hurt, or dead.
• Be careful if you see animals like bats or raccoons out during the day. These animals usually only come out at night.

If you think you or your pet came into contact with a rabid animal, call your doctor or local health department immediately.
