As the new school year kicks off, new viral trends and online challenges are already circulating through hallways and group chats. It’s the perfect time on this to reset digital expectations and help your kids navigate online risks with confidence:

🗣Ask About School Trends: Kids open up more when discussing what others are doing. Start conversations about general school fads to get honest insight into what's happening at school without making them feel defensive.
💬Build Critical Thinking: Discuss trending online challenges calmly. Ask open-ended questions like, "What's the worst that could happen?" to help them evaluate whether a few likes are worth a real-world risk.
🔐Protect Personal Information: Remind students never to share location details, class schedules, or identifiable school photos publicly.
📱Stay Connected: Follow your kids' social accounts to stay in the loop, and make connecting on platforms a condition of device ownership. Setting up a Family Media Plan helps keep boundaries clear as the school year begins.

As another school year begins, pediatric nurse practitioner Misty Lovell shares key steps to keep your kids safe and confident this year:

📱 Keep contacts updated: Double-check emergency phone numbers, pickup lists, and allergy info with the school front office.
🚨 Teach "Tricky People": Move beyond "stranger danger." Teach kids that anyone—stranger or acquaintance—who asks them to break rules, keep secrets, or makes them uncomfortable is a "tricky person." Remind them safety comes before being polite!
🏡 Memorize the basics: Make sure your child knows your phone number, home address, and which trusted adults to go to at school.
💬 Keep lines open: Talk about safety during everyday check-ins so kids feel comfortable coming to you with worries without feeling anxious.

Kids learn to read at different paces, and it’s normal for them to struggle at some point. But if your child seems particularly frustrated with reading and writing over an extended period of time, there’s a chance they may have a learning disorder called dyslexia. Contact your pediatrician if your child is showing signs of dyslexia.

As kids go back to school, here are some easy tips you can use to reduce food waste in your child’s packed lunch:

1. Get your child’s input on what they like.
2. Avoid ‘wish packing’ foods that your child won’t eat at home as these foods will likely be discarded at school.
3. Cut up fruits and veggies so they are easier to eat.
4. Make lunch fun! Add fun shapes or colors to your kid’s meal.
5. Make sure to get the portions right for kids of different ages.
6. Aim for “zero-waste lunches” by using reusable water bottles, containers, and snack bags, compostable cutlery, and bento-style lunch boxes.
7. Always keep food safety in mind!

A child can’t focus on growing their mind if they don’t feel safe in their environment. 🩺✨

True pediatric health goes beyond check-ups and vaccines—it starts with emotional and physical safety. When kids feel secure at school, stress goes down, curiosity goes up, and learning actually happens.

As we head back to school, here are 4 quick ways to protect your child’s peace of mind this :

📲 Keep Details Current: Double-check that the front office and school nurse have updated emergency and medical contacts.
💬 Find Their Safe Person: Ask your child, “Who is one adult at school you feel comfortable talking to?” Knowing who to turn to builds immediate resilience.
🛡️ Normalize Boundaries: Remind your kids that their voice matters. Teaching them it’s okay to say “no” or report something uncomfortable empowers them.
🏠 Model the Standard: Safe habits, open communication, and emotional regulation at home pave the way for safety at school.

Healthy kids are safe kids. Let’s make this school year secure from the inside out. 💛
