Dr. Kelley Reinsmith-Jones (right), who serves on the YMCA Board of Directors in Rocky Mount, NC, recently connected with Ms. Yvette Richardson (left), a part-time Social Work instructor, at the Rocky Mount YMCA’s The Longest Table event. The gathering brought together community agencies and local residents to share a meal, build connections, and foster future partnerships and support networks.

Self-care meets advocacy! 💙 Yesterday, our ECU School of Social Work students took an intentional hour to recharge by participating in a self-care hour. Our students added a meaningful layer to their session by incorporating blue into their projects to honor Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Education and community. 💜

In addition to teaching in the History Department at ECU and the Criminal Justice Department at NC Wesleyan University, Dr. Outlaw-Starkey has a unique view into the world of social work as she owns and operates Pitch Perfect Counseling LLC, where she provides services to youth, collegiate, and professional athletes. She also provides consulting to a mental health agency in Goldsboro, NC, and serves as the first Black woman to hold a seat on her district’s Board of Education. Dr. Outlaw-Starkey states that as a sports social worker, her education at has been fundamental in shaping her approach to supporting student-athletes and athletic teams, including WNBA and NBA professional leagues. Her education at ECU provided her with the skills and confidence to uplift, transform, and inspire student-athletes and professional-athletes as they experience the positive impact she has on their lives.
