We recently dedicated a new Brittany’s Bench at Conestee Nature Preserve, honoring the life and legacy of Brittany Langley Lawson. 💚

Located at a scenic overlook along West Bay, one of Brittany’s favorite places to spend time with family, friends, and nature, the bench serves as a lasting reminder of the joy she found in the outdoors and the love she shared with those around her.

Created through Brittany’s Benches, this special space invites visitors to pause, reflect, and connect with the beauty of nature and one another. We are grateful to everyone who helped make this meaningful tribute possible.

Last week, Audubon South Carolina visited the Preserve to band Prothonotary Warblers and fit them with tiny geolocators. These beautiful yellow song birds nest in our wetlands and floodplain forests during the summer, but spend the winter in Central and South America.

The geolocations, tiny tracking devices, will help researchers track migration routes and identify the important habitats these birds depend on throughout their journey.

Fun Facts:
• Prothonotary warblers travel thousands of miles each year.
• Unlike most warblers, they nest in tree cavities and readily use nest boxes.
• Their bright yellow color earned them the nickname, “swamp canary”.
• The Prothonotary Warbler is South Carolina’s official State Migratory Bird.

We couldn’t have asked for a better day for Conestee’s Friends of the Preserve Spring Fling! Our Friends spent the evening exploring the Preserve, chatting with our Education, Trails & Conservation, and Admin teams, discovering fun facts about Conestee, participating in hands-on field trip activities, and spotting wildlife along the way!

Events like this are a wonderful reminder of the community that makes our work possible. Thank you to our Friends of the Preserve for making it possible for us to maintain trails, restore habitats, and connect people of all ages to the wonder of nature. 💚
