Today is the official start of the Atlantic hurricane season. It’s not a matter of if, but when, a healthcare emergency will occur and as a nurse, your skills will be desperately needed. Are you ready to answer the call?

Our Healthcare Emergency and Disaster Management certificate program will give you the education and practical stills to:

🏴‍☠️ Understand the language of disaster planning and emergency management
🏴‍☠️ Know the four phases of emergency management and how different agencies work within response systems
🏴‍☠️ Understand the legal and ethical principles that underlie emergency and disaster management
🏴‍☠️ Understand how to respond to the psychological and spiritual impact of disasters

“We just graduated our largest group in the history of the program in May, who enrolled in response to Hurricane Helene,” said Dr. Michelle Skipper, the certificate program’s director. “We are also doing increased work in these courses on emerging infections such as hantavirus and Ebola.”

From Dean Bim:

As East Carolina University College of Nursing continues to grow, from approximately 500 students in 2000 to nearly 1,600 students in 2026, we must continue evolving our infrastructure to best support student success!

Today, I am excited to announce the transition of our Student Services Office into the newly established Department of Student Services (DOSS). This strategic transition creates a more aligned, comprehensive, and student-centered support model that brings advising, compliance, student success, counseling and wellbeing, pathways programs, recruitment, and student operations together under one department.

As part of this transition:

🏴‍☠️ Dr. Erin Beaman will serve as the inaugural Associate Dean for DOSS.
🏴‍☠️ Abby Paul will serve as Director, Student Services: BSN Pathways.
🏴‍☠️ Laura Batson will serve as Director, Student Services: Student Operations.
🏴‍☠️ We have also created a new Director of Student Success position.
🏴‍☠️ Dr. Kelly Cleaton, EdD, ENC RIBN an aRIBN Coordinator and Dr. Gwen Tyson, Director, Academic Counseling, along with their teams, will transition into DOSS.

I also want to express my sincere appreciation to Dr. Laura Gantt for her exceptional leadership, mentorship, and unwavering commitment to our students, faculty, and staff over many years. Her transformational leadership helped build the strong foundation that made this important transition possible.

Excited for this next chapter as we continue strengthening student success and organizational excellence at ECU College of Nursing.

Recently, Dr. Mitzi Pestaner and Dr. Allison Crowe, from the ECU College of Education, partnered with the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Coastal Plain to lead an impactful, all day interdisciplinary conference focused on youth wellness and mental health across Eastern North Carolina.

The conference brought together ECU faculty and staff from across campus—including Nursing, Counselor Education, Music Therapy, Addiction and Rehabilitation, and the ECU Counseling Center—to create a dynamic learning environment centered on wellness, help seeking behaviors, su***de prevention, and peer support. Through hands on workshops and interactive activities, ECU professionals engaged adolescents in meaningful conversations and skill building experiences designed to promote resilience and connection.

A highlight of the day included delivery of the SOS (Signs of Su***de) Prevention Program, an evidence based, school focused initiative that teaches young people how to recognize the warning signs of su***de and respond effectively when someone may be at risk. By integrating evidence based prevention with interdisciplinary expertise, the event underscored ECU’s commitment to community engagement, collaboration, and the well being of youth throughout the region.

Together, ECU faculty, campus partners, and community organizations demonstrated the power of collaboration in advancing mental health awareness and support—making a lasting impact on students, families, and communities across Eastern North Carolina.
